Geaux Rocket Ride breathes new life into Pin Oak Farm

Bill Denver/Equi-Photo
Ignored on the board against a stack field in the Grade 1 Haskell at Monmouth, Geaux Rocket Ride pulled off a dominate upset victory.

In January 2022, as farms around Kentucky began delivering new foals, the fields were as empty as they’d ever been at Pin Oak Stud in Versailles, Ky. Josephine Abercrombie had been winding down commercial operations at the farm, which she and her father had purchased in the 1950s and which she had developed into a prominent nursery. The farm’s active broodmares and their weanlings had been sold in a dispersal the prior September, and its yearlings had also been sold. Abercrombie died peacefully at her home on the farm Jan. 5, 2022, just 10 days shy of her 96th birthday.

Twilight Gleaming has several speedsters to deal with in Daisycutter

Benoit Photo
Twilight Gleaming won last year's Daisycutter at Del Mar and is back looking for a repeat, after a disappointing trip to Royal Ascot.

Never mind that she faced some of the world’s best sprinters, Twilight Gleaming left trainer Wesley Ward surprised when she finished 16th of 17 in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in England last month.

“It was a little bit of a head-scratcher,” Ward said Wednesday. “Being a Group 1 race at Royal Ascot, you can forgive that. That was the only race she’s run badly in her whole career.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – As well as Drew’s Gold has run winning four of his five career starts, trainer and part-owner James Chapman expects his best performance to date when he sends him out in Friday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Amsterdam Stakes for 3-year-old sprinters at Saratoga.

“He’ll run better than he’s ever run,” Chapman said Wednesday. “If there’s something that’s going to jump with him then so be it. I know he ran a big Beyer number last time, but he’ll move forward again.”

Nest got the jump on Clairiere in Sunday's Shuvee, which had a four-horse field.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Nest and Clairiere, who finished first and second, respectively, in Sunday’s Grade 2 Shuvee Stakes, are expected to meet for a second time this meet in the Grade 1, $500,000 Personal Ensign on Aug. 25.

Nest returned from an 8 1/2-month layoff to defeat Clairiere by 2 1/4 lengths in the Shuvee, taking advantage of a soft early pace that allowed jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. to wait as long as possible to ask his filly to run. She got the jump on Clairiere and jockey Joel Rosario.
