Prat, Carmouche to serve three-day suspensions

Flavien Prat will serve a careless riding suspension from Wednesday to Friday this week.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Jockeys Flavien Prat and Kendrick Carmouche will both be serving three-day suspensions this week after being sanctioned by the stewards for careless riding.

Prat will sit out Wednesday through Friday for his ride on Happy Farm in the eighth race on the July 14 card. In that race, Prat let Happy Farm come over on Thinkaboutit, forcing jockey Dylan Davis to take his horse up. Thinkaboutit overcame that trouble to win the race at odds of 20-1 while Happy Farm finished third.

Claimer Topper T's latest Beyer Speed Figure was off the charts

As a 2-year-old Topper T showed enough promise to run in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

On a weekend when most racing fans were directing their attention to the Haskell Stakes at Monmouth and the Shuvee Stakes at Saratoga, the most remarkable performance in the sport occurred in a $30,000 claiming race for Iowa-breds at Prairie Meadows.

Topper T, a well-traveled 7-year-old, won that race with a stunning Beyer Speed Figure of 110, the third-highest such figure of the year. Cody’s Wish tops the list with the 112 he earned winning the prestigious Metropolitan Mile.

There are races coming up for Roses for Debra at Saratoga, Kentucky Downs, and Presque Isle.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Among the dream matchups racing fans might clamor to see before the end of the Saratoga season is a meeting between the gray filly and mare turf sprint stars Caravel and Roses for Debra. The latter thrust herself into the picture for division honors with an impressive victory in the Grade 3 Caress Stakes here Saturday.

Unfortunately, while the paths of the two fillies could be destined to cross at some time during the second half of the year, that meeting does not seem to be in the cards this meet.

Restrepo confident Mage will move forward in Travers

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Kentucky Derby winner Mage, runner-up in Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Stakes at Monmouth Park, was scheduled to arrive in Saratoga on Monday afternoon to prepare for a start in the Grade 1, $1.25 million Travers Stakes on Aug. 26.

Part-owner Ramiro Restrepo, said he was “over the moon” with Mage’s second-place finish to Geaux Rocket Ride in the Haskell, Mage’s first start since his third-place finish in the Preakness Stakes on May 20. Mage had only four published workouts between the Preakness and Haskell.

Mackinnon back in Southern California for Eddie Read Stakes

After a brief stint with trainer Chad Brown, Mackinnon will return to his original trainer Doug O'Neil in Sunday's Grade 2 Eddie Read Stakes at Del mar.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Mackinnon, a two-time stakes winner in California in 2021, will return to Southern California for a start in Sunday’s Grade 2 Eddie Read Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Del Mar, trainer Doug O’Neil said over the weekend.

Mackinnon was based with O’Neill from the start of his career in 2021 until last fall when he was sent to trainer Chad Brown in New York. For Brown, Mackinnon was second in the Grade 2 Hill Prince Stakes at the Belmont at Aqueduct meeting last October and fourth in an allowance race on yielding turf at Belmont Park on July 4.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Next, who has improved dramatically since first stretching out around three turns late last summer, will attempt to add the $150,000 Birdstone to his growing list of long-distance accomplishments when trying a mile and three-quarters for the first time Thursday at Saratoga.

Next has won three of his last four starts by an average margin of nearly nine lengths, including a pair of Grade 2 stakes, the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance in his 2022 finale last fall at Keeneland and the Brooklyn at Belmont Park six weeks ago.

Cedillo won't need surgery for fracture

Jockey Abel Cedillo was thrown from his Sunday mount on Get the Gold, fracturing a bone in his neck. The fracture will not require surgery but Cedillo will miss significant time with physical therapy.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Jockey Abel Cedillo sustained a fractured bone in his neck in a one-horse spill shortly after the start of the fourth race at Del Mar on Sunday, the rider said Monday morning.

In a phone interview, Cedillo said he remains hospitalized and has been informed by doctors that he will not need surgery. He said he will undergo four to six weeks of physical therapy.

“I’ve got a little pain right now,” Cedillo said.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Echo Zulu returns to the site of where her championship campaign of 2021 began when she heads a compact quartet of graded stakes winners in Wednesday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Honorable Miss Handicap at Saratoga.

Echo Zulu won her career debut by 5 1/2 lengths and the Grade 1 Spinaway by four lengths to kick off her career and 2-year-old campaign that ended a perfect 4 for 4, earning the Eclipse Award for champion juvenile filly.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The impeccably bred 3-year-old colt Ready Shakespeare will take center stage when debuting in Thursday’s fifth race, a seven-furlong maiden special on the roomy main turf at Woodbine.

A homebred owned by Charles Fipke, Ready Shakespeare has posted several solid works for Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield, including five-eighths in 59.40 seconds over the turf training course on July 9. A week earlier, he outworked stakes winner Ready for the Lady when breezing five-eighths in 1:01.40 on the Tapeta under jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson.

Ceiling Crusher runs in Fleet Treat before heading east for Cotillion

Ceiling Crusher is regarded as the best 3-year-old filly in California and will run in Thursday's Fleet Treat at Del Mar, as she preps for a start in the Grade 1 Cotillion at Parx in late September.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Before she ships east later this summer for a million-dollar Grade 1, the undefeated filly Ceiling Crusher gets another chance to run up the score Thursday at Del Mar.

Romping winner of two California-bred stakes, by a combined margin of more than 32 lengths, Ceiling Crusher looks odds-on in the $175,000 Fleet Treat Stakes for statebred 3-year-old fillies. After that, deeper water.

“We’re optimistic Thursday is going to go well and she’s going to come out of in good shape,” trainer Doug O’Neill said. “And then the Cotillion, that’s our big swing.”
