About the Belmont Stakes

Saratoga

The final leg of the American Triple Crown is the Belmont Stakes, historically a 1 1/2 mile race for a lineup of three-year-old Thoroughbreds held at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York, every June. The Belmont Stakes horse race carries a purse of $2 million and usually draws one of if not both the winners of the Kentucky Derby and/or Preakness Stakes.

When is the Belmont Stakes? The 2025 Belmont Stakes heads a spectacular Belmont Stakes Racing Festival at Saratoga that begins on Wednesday, June 4, and continues through Sunday, June 8. The five-day festival will include 27 stakes races with purses exceeding $11 million.

Six stakes headline Opening Day Wednesday and four stakes races will be held on the Thursday of Belmont week, along with another six graded stakes run on Friday. On Saturday's Belmont Stakes undercard are horse races such as the $1 million Metropolitan Handicap (Met Mile), the $1 million Manhattan, the $500,000 Jaipur, and the $500,000 Woody Stephens - all are Grade 1 events.

Belmont Stakes FAQ

  • The Belmont Stakes is open only to 3-year-olds that are nominated to the Triple Crown series.

  • The traditional distance of the Belmont Stakes is 1 ½ miles, when run at longtime home Belmont Park.   The 2025 Belmont Stakes, like the prior year, will be run at a distance of 1 ¼ miles at Saratoga Race Course, while Belmont Park undergoes construction.   This marks the eighth time in the race's history that the Belmont Stakes has been run at 1 ¼ miles, having been run at this distance six times between 1890-1905.

  • The race is often called "The Test of the Champion" because when run at its traditional distance of 1 ½ miles at Belmont Park, it is the longest of the three Triple Crown races.

  • In 1973, Secretariat won the Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths - in a world record time of 2:24.

  • White carnations are the traditional flower of the Belmont Stakes.  Approximately 700 white carnations are used for the blanket draped upon the winning horse.
