Heartland likely for Del Mar Futurity of maiden score

After a troubled start, the well-regarded 2-year-old Heartland seemed hopelessly beaten in a maiden race at 5 1/2 furlongs at Del Mar on Saturday.

Then came the stretch run. Racing on the rail in a field of six, Heartland closed with a flashy rally under jockey Juan Hernandez to win by two lengths in what is likely to be a prep for the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs Sept. 10.

“He dug in,” trainer Bob Baffert said on Sunday. “He got a lot of experience from that. We’re happy with him.”

Bluelightspecial, Corningstone to clash again in First Lady

Bluelightspecial will once again take on rival Corningstone in Wednesday's $200,000 First Lady Stakes at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

The Indiana-bred dirt route 3-year-old fillies so far this season have been much faster than the Indiana-bred dirt route colts and geldings. That’s not an indictment of the colts and geldings so much as a credit to the fillies.

Trainer Lawrence Smith is running Elegant Tatse, who was claimed for $10,000 in her last start, against War Like Goddess in the Glens Falls on Thursday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – When one sees Elegant Taste entered in Thursday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Glens Falls Stakes at Saratoga, the first thought is the filly was entered in the wrong race.

Just two weeks ago, the 4-year-old filly won a $10,000 claiming race at Penn National, a race originally scheduled for turf but run on dirt.

She was claimed out of that race by owner Janet Quaintance and trainer Carl O’Callaghan. She will run in Thursday’s 1 1/2-mile race for trainer Lawrence Smith.

Paddington tries to pull off rare triple in Sussex

Megan Ridgwell
Inspiral won two Group 1 miles last year, including this victory in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien in 2000 won the St. James’s Palace Stakes, the Eclipse Stakes, and the Sussex Stakes with the 3-year-old colt Giant’s Causeway. He starts odds-on favorite Paddington trying to pull the same triple in the Group 1 Sussex on Wednesday at Goodwood Racecourse in England.
