Complicated card has a $179K pick six carryover

Christophe Clement-trained Silver Skillet will likely be favored in the Suzie O’Cain if the statebred stakes stays on the turf.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – A pick six carryover of $179,735 awaits horseplayers Wednesday at Saratoga, but with four legs scheduled for the turf and significant rain forecast Tuesday, things could get complicated.

Further complicating matters, should the races remain on turf, is the fact the fields are full and the rails on both courses are out 27 feet, narrowing the playing field.

Challenges abound in second half of Thursday card at Del Mar

Emily Shields
First post for Del Mar racing is scheduled for 5 p.m. ET on Thursday.

DEL MAR, Calif. – Thursday starts easy for Del Mar horseplayers – front-running favorite Kissed by Fire will likely be long gone in a maiden turf sprint that is the first race of the day.

It gets tougher after that, which is nice, because Kissed by Fire’s perceived dominance translates to corresponding low odds. Higher-odds options follow after Del Mar passes the midway point of the 31-day meet. Thursday is the 16th day. The second half of the season begins the second half of the Thursday card, which is challenging for both handicappers and horses.

Alpha Meister needs better start to win maiden

Michael Burns
First post for Woodbine racing is scheduled for 4:50 p.m. ET on Thursday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Alpha Meister’s rail draw in Thursday’s third race at Woodbine is far from ideal for the slow breaker, but the talented gelding may have found a field that he can beat in the seven-furlong maiden special for 3-year-olds and up.

Alpha Meister started three times last year at 2 for trainer Mark Casse. After missing the break at first asking Sept. 25, he rallied outside from the rear of the field to finish fifth after getting cut off in deep stretch.
