Brown's turf quartet looks tough to separate in Lake Placid

Barbara D. Livingston
Surge Capacity, winner of the Lake George Stakes in her last start, is the likely favorite in the Grade 2 Lake Placid Stakes.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Chad Brown’s quartet of 3-year-old fillies entered for turf in Saturday’s Grade 2, $200,000 Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga have combined to win three stakes this year. While that’s not surprising, it is noteworthy that none of those horses were favored when they won.

As was the case in the Grade 3 Lake George here July 21 – when Brown-runners finished 1-2-4-5 topped by 5-1 winner Surge Capacity – Brown has four of the eight runners entered for turf in the Lake Placid, scheduled for 1 1/16 miles. So, who might the value of the Brown quartet be Saturday?

Anisette tries to buck history in Del Mar Oaks

DEL MAR, Calif. – Apart from one curious exception, Del Mar Oaks winners can come from anywhere – shippers from New York, invaders from Europe, and allowance and stakes runners from California.

But when an eclectic, mostly local field of 3-year-old fillies run a mile and one-eighth on turf Saturday in the Grade 1, $300,000 Del Mar Oaks, the likely favorite will aim for an unlikely feat. Anisette, impressive recent winner of the Grade 2 San Clemente at Del Mar, faces nine rivals and a historical challenge – San Clemente winners almost never repeat in the Del Mar Oaks.

Provost will be tough to deny if he can avoid a duel

Provost is the runner to beat in Saturday’s feature at Emerald Downs. The 6-year-old son of Street Boss, trained by Justin Evans, meets a field of five other $10,000 claimers in the one-mile race.

“I think he’s very versatile and can go either sprint or route,” Evans said. “Ideally he can set his own pace and make things happen on the front end.”

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Saturday’s Grade 2 King Edward is a prep for next month’s Grade 1 Woodbine Mile, and Shirl’s Speight needs to get a race under his girth more than any other horse in the one-mile turf event to set him up for the $1 million Breeders’ Cup qualifier.
