Canaletto, The Puma pointed to Tampa Bay Derby over Fountain of Youth

Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos
Canaletto was an impressive eight-length winner of a maiden race in his debut Jan. 25 at Gulfstream Park.

Canaletto and The Puma, who were both under consideration for Saturday’s Grade 2 Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park, instead are being pointed to the Grade 3, $400,000 Tampa Bay Derby on March 7.

Canaletto, trained by Chad Brown, was an impressive eight-length debut winner of a one-mile maiden race at Gulfstream Park on Jan. 25. Brown had mentioned the Tampa Bay Derby shortly after that race but then got intrigued by the Fountain of Youth when it was revealed that the 2-year-old champion, Ted Noffey, was sidelined. In the end, Brown stuck with his first instinct.

Delgado finds right spot to wheel back X Y Prime

Tom Keyser
Leading rider Samuel Marin will be aboard X Y Prime in Wednesday's featured allowance at Tampa.

Trainer Jorge Delgado may not necessarily have been looking to run X Y Prime back in 11 days off his last race, but the right condition came up at this time and X Y Prime looks like the right horse in Wednesday’s second-level allowance/optional $32,000 claiming feature at Tampa Bay Downs.

Mish, at age 9, is still performing well. He makes his 39th career start at Gulfstream on Sunday.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The old veteran Mish and young upstart Elnajd are certain to garner most of the attention in Sunday’s $86,000 main event, a six-furlong dash for older horses to be decided under allowance and optional-claiming conditions on the main track.

The 9-year-old Mish enters the race with 11 victories in 38 career starts, while the 4-year-old Elnajd has just a single race on his résumé, having registered a game 1 1/2-length maiden win when launching his career at Fair Grounds during the final week of 2025.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Letta’s Legacy, who will be seeking her fourth straight win in Sunday’s featured allowance at Oaklawn Park, is a special homebred for trainer C.R. Trout.

She keeps the memory of his late wife, Arletta, alive.

“My wife had named all of my horses through the years and then when she passed away, we thought we’d name one after her and that’s what we did,” Trout said.

Sciacca retiring from training after Sunday's sixth

Barbara D. Livingston
Gary Sciacca has won 1,031 races from 12,614 starts in his 45-year training career.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Gary Sciacca remembers feeding carrots to Forego when he was too young to even know the horse’s legend. Later in life, Sciacca got to train for and become friends with the likes of Bill Parcells and Bobby Flay. In 1996, Sciacca hung out at the Breeders’ Cup with Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft.

“A lot of great memories,” Sciacca said. “The business has been super to me my whole life. I’m very fortunate and blessed to have had a great career.”

Well-rested pair impresses in allowance

Before his win Thursday, Corporate Power (at rail) hadn't raced since November 2024.

The 5-year-old horse Corporate Power came into Thursday’s seventh race at Fair Grounds with a recency edge over his Steve Asmussen-trained stablemate, Conquest Warrior, another 5-year-old.

Corporate Power had last raced in November 2024, finishing fifth in the Discovery Stakes at Aqueduct. Conquest Warrior, meanwhile, raced for the first time since checking in a distant fourth behind Fierceness in the 2024 Florida Derby.

Reagan's Honor earns 96 Beyer, targets Blue Grass Stakes

Lou Hodges Jr./Hodges Photography
In Thursday's win, Reagan's Honor missed a track record by .01 of a second.

The Risen Star Stakes this past Saturday at Fair Grounds came three days before Mardi Gras, Fat Tuesday. Ash Wednesday marked, for Catholics in New Orleans, the beginning of the solemn 40-day season of Lent. And at Fair Grounds, the 35 days separating the Risen Star and the Louisiana Derby might have been assumed also to mark a period of relatively quiet reflection. The 3-year-old colt Reagan’s Honor was not ready for the party to end.

A freshened Irish Maxima tries to regain old form

Barbara D. Livingston
Grade 3 winner Irish Maxima looks to get back on track in Saturday's featured allowance at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – There is no stakes race Saturday at Aqueduct but Grade 3 stakes winner Irish Maxima will look to jumpstart her career in a conditioned allowance race for female sprinters that serves as the feature on the nine-race card.

From August 2024 to April 2025, Irish Maxima won six of seven starts, capped by a 1 1/2-length victory in the Grade 3 Distaff at Aqueduct. It went sideways for Irish Maxima thereafter as she was soundly beaten by Ways and Means in the Grade 2 Bed o’ Roses at Saratoga.
