Bradshaw back in Thoroughbred racing with Oaks propsect

Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw is the co-owner of a pair of 3-year-olds set to make starts this weekend.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Long before Terry Bradshaw won four Super Bowls as quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers, went on to a high-profile broadcasting career, entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame, and earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, there were horses in his life.

And there continues to be. Bradshaw is partners in both the unbeaten Taken by the Wind, who is set to run Sunday at Oaklawn Park in the Grade 3, $750,000 Honeybee Stakes, and the 3-year-old Power Aura, who launches his career Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

Nitrogen on track for Azeri; will face stablemate La Cara

After launching her 4-year-old campaign with a win in the Bayakoa, Nitrogen will start next in the Azeri.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Champion Nitrogen breezed Wednesday at Oaklawn in her first move since winning her 4-year-old debut in the Grade 3 Bayakoa here Feb. 7.

She went a half-mile in 49.60 seconds. The track was fast and the move was what trainer Mark Casse said he was looking for, to “do a little something, but not a lot.”

“She’s doing super,” he said.

Casse said Nitrogen remains on course for the Grade 2, $400,000 Azeri on March 7 at Oaklawn.

Baffert taking aim at first Honeybee win with Explora

Explora will look to become the first Honeybee winner for trainer Bob Baffert on Sunday at Oaklawn.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Through the years Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has compiled an outstanding record in 3-year-old stakes at Oaklawn Park, but he will be charting new territory in the local races on Sunday.

The Southern California-based Baffert will be looking to win the Honeybee for the first time when he sends out Explora in the Grade 3, $750,000 race for 3-year-old fillies that shares a card with the Grade 2, $1 million Rebel.

Future Is Now to be bred to Constitution

Future Is Now earned her final graded stakes victory at Saratoga in the Grade 3 Caress.

Future Is Now, a four-time graded stakes winner who earned nearly $1 million on turf, is maintaining her regal status in retirement. Co-owner Tracy Mulroy said the Maryland-bred mare is living the good life at Legacy Farm in Beaumont, Va., and will be bred to Constitution this year.

As she prepares for her first breeding season, Future Is Now is currently sharing a field with Call Another Play, another Maryland-bred stakes winner. Mulroy said it’s a peaceful life for the two mares.

“She just seems like a happy girl,” Mulroy said. “Ready to move on to her second career.”

Russell considers next steps for pair of impressive 3-year-olds

Taj Mahal earned an 85 Beyer Speed Figure in the $100,000 Miracle Wood, dueling Let’s Go Lando to the wire to win by a neck.

Trainer Brittany Russell formally introduced two young guns in her 3-year-old crop last Saturday, as Taj Mahal and Peach Tie delivered sharp efforts to sweep a pair of $100,000 stakes at Laurel Park. Both runners could stay close to home while adding distance in the coming months.

“It was a great day,” Russell said. “Look, I had confidence in both horses and I’m just glad they showed up and ran the way I thought they could.”

Blackout Time was scratched from the Breeders' Cup Juvenile by regulartory veterinarians. He makes his first start since in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn on Sunday.

Trainer Kenny McPeek is still perplexed over what happened regarding Blackout Time on the last Friday of October. It hasn’t deterred him from trying to get the now 3-year-old colt to the grandest stage on the first Saturday in May.

Blackout Time has not raced since his runner-up finish to Ted Noffey in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland on Oct. 4. He will return to the races Sunday in the Grade 2, $1 million Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park as McPeek tries to get him to the May 2 Kentucky Derby.

Prep winners giving Oxley another case of Derby Fever

Silent Tactic roared down the center of the track to win the Grade 3 Southwest.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – John C. Oxley is dealing with a slight cold this week. He wouldn’t mind if it developed into a fever by late afternoon Sunday.

That would be Derby Fever.

Oxley has Silent Tactic and Strategic Risk on deck for the Grade 2, $1 million Rebel on Sunday at Oaklawn Park. The Mark Casse trainees have won the first two Kentucky Derby points races at the meet, with homebred Strategic Risk taking the $250,000 Smarty Jones in January and Silent Tactic winning the Grade 3, $1 million Southwest in February.
