Lady Ilze shortens up, needs better break

Debra A. Roma
Off her victory in the La Troienne, Shred the Gnar will likely start next in the Fleur de Lis at Churchill Downs.

Breaking from post 12 in a second-level turf allowance race April 10 at Keeneland, Lady Ilze dropped straight to the tail of the field under Jose Ortiz, made an eye-catching, swooping move from the seven-sixteenths pole into the homestretch, appeared to be gearing up for a run at the leaders, and then went flat from the eighth pole to the wire, checking in fifth.

Potentially vulnerable favorites add to intrigue of pick six with $42,057 carryover

Start the Ride, winner of the Cal Cup Derby, will try turf for the first time on Friday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Skeptical bettors are back in business Friday at Santa Anita.

The $2 pick six begins with a $42,057 carryover, and cynics will consider a trio of short-price favorites at the end of the card to be vulnerable.

A colt who never tried turf is 6-5 to win on turf in race 6. A filly who never raced two turns is even-money around two turns in race 7. Finally, a filly who never sprinted on turf is even-money to win race 8, a turf sprint.

A decision on the Preakness status of Golden Tempo likely won't be made until the end of the week once he resumes training.

If Kentucky Derby winner Golden Tempo shows up in Laurel, Md., for the Preakness on May 16, it looks like there will be a large number of horses – virtually none of whom participated in the Kentucky Derby – willing to take him on in the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.

As of Monday, there were 15 horses – including Golden Tempo – under consideration for the Preakness, which this year is being held at Laurel Park due to ongoing construction at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. The Preakness is limited to 14 starters, but two also-eligibles can be carded.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The veteran turf runner Gold Phoenix is unlikely to race again until late July after finishing a troubled seventh in the Grade 1 Old Forester Bourbon Turf Classic on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Trainer Phil D’Amato said at Santa Anita on Sunday that the Grade 2 Eddie Read Stakes at 1 1/8 miles on July 26 at Del Mar is a summertime goal for Gold Phoenix, who has won 11 of 32 starts and earned $2,377,087.

Turf runners hope ground stays firm with rain in forecast

Pineland (12-1) may see his odds shorten based on a good second to multiple stakes winner Reagan’s Wit at Keeneland.

With lost hat feathers and dropped mint leaves swept away and everyone hopefully having caught up on some sleep, life after the Kentucky Derby gets underway Thursday at Churchill Downs as the spring meet picks up with its regular fare.

The eight-race “Twilight Thursday” card begins at 5 p.m., highlighted by a pair of allowances. After opening on April 25 and running seven of eight days, including a marathon 13-race card for the prime-time Kentucky Oaks and 14 races on Kentucky Derby day, a more relaxed pace to start the four-day race week isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Ottinho won't go in Peter Pan or Preakness

Coady Media
Ottinho, second in the Blue Grass, won't start in the Peter Pan or Preakness, according to trainer Chad Brown.

Ottinho, runner-up in the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes, will not run in either the Grade 3 Peter Pan Stakes on Saturday at Aqueduct or the Preakness Stakes at Laurel Park on May 16, trainer Chad Brown said.

Brown said Ottinho missed a work on the last weekend of April due to a foot issue, then worked a slow half-mile in 52 seconds by himself Saturday morning at Churchill Downs. Brown did not have an immediate plan for the horse.

Brown said that Tariff Mindset, a horse he was originally planning to run in the Peter Pan, is on the shelf for a little while.

Trainer Cherie DeVaux, a former assistant to Chad Brown, became the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby.

Trainer Chad Brown said Golden Tempo’s victory in the Kentucky Derby was well-deserved by his former assistant Cherie DeVaux, who became the first female trainer to win the Kentucky Derby. DeVaux went out on her own in 2018 after working as Brown’s New York assistant for eight years.

T O Elvis to point for Breeders' Cup Sprint; New York prep possible

Justin N. Lane
T O Elvis, winner of the Churchill Downs Stakes, will be pointed toward the Breeders Cup Sprint, with a prep at Belmont as a possibility.

T O Elvis, dominant winner of Saturday’s Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes, will be pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Oct. 31 at Keeneland. He will likely have one start before then and it’s possible that start could come in New York.

T O Elvis, who left Churchill Downs on Sunday morning to head to Chicago before flying back home to Japan, was originally slated to run in a race at the Royal Ascot meeting, said Yuto Kumagai, who works with the connections of T O Elvis, including trainer Daisuke Takayanagi.
