Precise holds clear edge in English 1000 Guineas

Barbara D. Livingston
Precise had to be scratched from a start last fall in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. She makes her first start of 2026 in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket.

Precise ended her 2-year-old campaign in the infirmary. Well, not exactly. The upper-respiratory infection that led to her raceday scratch from the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf was not all that serious, but it did cost her the intended final start of an excellent 2-year-old campaign. Precise lost her debut, then reeled off four in a row, the last two Group 1s, first the Moyglare Stud, then the Fillies’ Mile.

Grammy Girl stars in Vagrancy seeking third straight win

Debra A. Roma
With four wins at Aqueduct, Grammy Girl tries for her third consecutive victory in Sunday's Vargancy.

Grammy Girl will go for her third straight stakes victory in the Grade 3 Vagrancy on Sunday at Aqueduct. The consistent 5-year-old mare has been on a tear for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. and will enter the 6 1/2-furlong sprint with plenty of familiarity.

A consistent allowance performer for most of her career, Grammy Girl shipped to Laurel Park last year and ended her 2025 season with a triumphant return to stakes company. Coming off a nine-day turnaround made little difference as she powered home to upset Takethemoneyhoney in the $100,000 Willa On The Move.

Dynamic Pricing again using Beaugay as springboard to bigger things

Dynamic Pricing wins Perfect Sting at SAR Aug 29 2025
Barbara D. Livingston
Dynamic Pricing wins the Perfect Sting at Saratoga. Earlier in the year, she won the Beaugay and Grade 1 Just a Game back to back.

Last year, it took Dynamic Pricing two starts to become a Grade 1 winner. The 5-year-old mare might have to wait slightly longer in 2026, but she will try a familiar stepping-stone in the Grade 3 Beaugay Stakes on Sunday at Aqueduct.

“She had a challenging trip there [finishing fourth in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley at Keeneland], but she likes Aqueduct,” trainer Chad Brown said. “I almost waited for [the Beaugay], but she was ready to run, so I gave it a shot. Hoping to get her back in form.”

Westchester Stakes made to order for Bishops Bay

Barbara D. Livingston
Bishops Bay (left) wins the Cigar Mile in December. He is unbeaten in three starts at Aqueduct.

Bishops Bay is 4 for 4 at one mile, 3 for 3 at Aqueduct, and 6 for 6 when he’s ridden by Flavien Prat. Sunday, Bishops Bay will run in the Grade 3 $175,000 Westchester Stakes, a one-mile race at Aqueduct with Flavien Prat in the saddle.

Like his chances?

Bishops Bay scored his first graded stakes victory in last spring’s Westchester. In the fall, he added wins in the Grade 3 Forty Niner and Grade 2 Cigar Mile, all one-turn mile races at Aqueduct. In the Cigar Mile, Bishops Bay earned a 107 Beyer Speed Figure.

Hey Jessie stretches out to 1 1/2 miles for Sunday's Santa Barbara Stakes at Santa Anita.

Hey Jessie’s career has been built for distance races such as Sunday’s $100,000 Santa Barbara Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/2 miles on turf at Santa Anita.

In January, Hey Jessie finished second by a half-length to Vodka Vodka in the $175,000 Unusual Heat Turf Classic against statebred males at 1 1/8 miles on turf. Vodka Vodka later finished second in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in March, and won the $250,000 Sunland Park Handicap in April.

Thorncliffe an ideal spot for Poulin in O T

Michael Burns
Poulin in O T will get back to his best distance in Sunday's $100,000 Thorncliffe Stakes at Woodbine.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Poulin in O T negotiates his favorite distance in Sunday’s $100,000 Thorncliffe Stakes at Woodbine and could be the dominant speed in the 5 1/2-furlong synthetic sprint for older runners.

A 6-year-old by Reload, Poulin in O T won two stakes at 2 for owner-trainer Steve Owens. He got good again in the winter of 2025 at Gulfstream and here that following spring, during which he won two shorter sprints. He then went to the sidelines after ending up second in a seven-furlong conditioned allowance on May 22.

Splendora, Ways and Means put a spark in Derby City Distaff

Barbara D. Livingston
Splendora has won five in a row, including a score in the Beholder Mile, but she did miss a recent work for this race.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A serious illness last summer cost Ways and Means a good chunk of her 2025 campaign. A far less serious illness could compromise her main rival, Splendora, in the Derby City Distaff on Saturday at Churchill.

Splendora won the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint last fall, and was an Eclipse Award finalist for champion female sprinter in 2025. You had better believe Ways and Means’s connections think their horse is an Eclipse-level sprinter, and she has returned for a 5-year-old season to prove it.

Honey Ryder, English Channel form a turf doubleheader

Spirit Doll wins maiden at SAR Aug 7 2025
Barbara D. Livingston
Saffie Joseph Jr. has given the mount on Spirit Doll in the Honey Ryder to Rasheed Hughes, who is based in Barbados.

Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. has his bases covered in the $100,000 Honey Ryder Stakes on Saturday at Gulfstream Park. With three contenders entered in the field of nine 3-year-old fillies, he is uniquely prepared for the mile race on turf.

Spirit Doll is the classiest of Joseph’s runners coming off a pair of graded stakes tries to begin her 3-year-old campaign. A juvenile stakes winner at Gulfstream, she ran at Keeneland last time out, finishing a disappointing ninth in the Grade 2 Appalachian.

Subsanador is a winner of 9 of 18 starts and has earned more than $1 million.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Oaklawn Park has been a magnet for Grade 1 winners this meet, and that trend will continue through the closing-day card Saturday with Subsanador shipping in from Southern California for the $200,000 Lake Ouachita.

The 1 1/16-mile stakes for 4-year-olds and up highlights a 13-race card that has a special first post of 12:15 p.m. Central. A second stakes, the $200,000 Arkansas Breeders’ Championship, drew 11, while the meet’s final race, the Trail’s End starter allowance, lured 14 to race 1 3/4 miles.

Kentucky Derby 2026: First-time jockeys and trainers

Barbara D. Livingston
Mark Glatt's So Happy will be a sentimental choice after the death of Glatt's wife, Dena, due to heart failure at age 57 in February.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – They’ve all felt the swirling winds of the hurricane, whether it was Riley Mott on the track as an assistant to his Kentucky Derby-winning father, a young Cherie DeVaux galloping beneath the twin spires, or riders piloting winners before a roaring Churchill Downs crowd on the Derby undercard.

Now, they’re in the eye of the storm. Accounting for the shape of the field as of Friday morning, as many as four trainers and seven jockeys are looking to make their Kentucky Derby debuts on Saturday.
