Trendsetter looks to prove he belongs in Peter Pan

Coady Media
Off an upset score in the Lexington, Trendsetter will likely be a shorter price in Saturday's Peter Pan at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trendsetter has evolved from a restricted sprint stakes winner on dirt last summer to a graded stakes winner around two turns on dirt this spring. At what level he fits in the 3-year-old dirt route division for the summer is to be determined.

Trendsetter passed his first test in graded company last month when he upset the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at 32-1 at Keeneland. Trendsetter figures a much shorter price against four modestly accomplished opponents in Saturday’s Grade 3, $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes at Aqueduct.

Outfielder can touch 'em all in William Walker

Coady Media
Despite setting fast fractions, Outfielder widened his lead through the stretch of the Animal Kingdom on March 21 at Turfway.

As a May 2-year-old in 2025, Outfielder aced his career debut, winning a Churchill Downs turf-sprint maiden by 6 1/4 lengths. Three months later in France, the colt, despite a poor break, finished a close fourth in a strong renewal of the Group 1 Prix Morny over a straight six furlongs. Back home, two more sprint wins, one dirt, the most recent on Tapeta. All that, and the horse comes to the $225,000 William Walker Stakes on Saturday at Churchill still more prospect than star. Does Outfielder just have warning-track power, or is he truly a home run threat?

ARCADIA, Calif. – When the colt So Happy returned this week to Santa Anita after finishing ninth in the Kentucky Derby, he joined two others in a rare slice of racetrack trivia.

The month of May might be the first month ever in which three Santa Anita Derby winners – So Happy, Journalism, and Stronghold – will train simultaneously over the same track.

Hastings refugee Henson starts fresh

Reed Palmer/Emerald Downs
At Emerald Downs, the reception of Hastings refugees has been “phenomenal,” says trainer Steve Henson.

Steve Henson, long one of the leading trainers at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver, British Columbia, was well aware that the ancient bull ring by the bay wasn’t what it once was. But when it was announced in December that the track would no longer host live racing after the provincial government decided to cease supplying it with casino subsidies, the news knocked Henson on his keister.

“It was like getting kicked in the nuts,” Henson said. “I always thought there’d be racing. I knew we were in trouble and would have to downsize, but to get that [news] . . .”

Lightly raced Marjoram can upset Senorita Stakes

Marjoram wins maiden at CD Nov 22 2025
Coady Media
Marjoram has had trouble at the break in both of her races. She'll need a clean beginning in the Senorita Stakes.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A well-bred, lightly raced filly owned and bred by a renowned international stable could deliver two favorable outcomes Saturday – the first Santa Anita stakes victory in more than two years for Juddmonte and a high-odds upset for bettors.

Marjoram is the least experienced runner in the Grade 3 Senorita, a hillside turf sprint for 3-year-old fillies. But after only two starts, she has given trainer Michael McCarthy and race-replay viewers reason to believe she is well above average. How good is Marjoram?

Golden Tempo after Derby win May 2 2026
Justin N. Lane
Cherie DeVaux said on Wednesday she believes Golden Tempo will benefit by having more than two weeks between races following his Derby effort. He will skip the Preakness and be pointed to the Belmont Stakes.

Golden Tempo, the Kentucky Derby winner, will bypass the Preakness Stakes on May 16 at Laurel Park and point to the Belmont Stakes on June 6 at Saratoga, trainer Cherie DeVaux said Wednesday.

“He ran the race of his life. We want to give him more time to get over that,” DeVaux said. “We feel it’s in his best interest to give him more time. He came out of the race in good order. We are pointing towards the Belmont.”

Moonstrocity back with maidens after Blue Grass whiff

Barbara D. Livingston
Moonstrocity's owners "wanted to take a peek and take the swing there, and it just didn’t pan out,” trainer Jena Antonucci said of the Blue Grass.

The Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes understandably proved to be well beyond the scope for Moonstrocity, whose half-court heave into Kentucky Derby contention came up well short. Nevertheless, the Tiz the Law colt could get his first victory in the sixth race on Friday at Gulfstream Park, a $68,000 maiden special weight at a mile on dirt.
