Keeneland has been light on numbers in some types of races this fall, largely mid- to upper-priced claimers on dirt, especially those for older fillies and mares. But that horse shortage apparently does not extend to second-level allowance races for female horses on the grass.

There might have been a chill in the air, but the action was hot and heavy out on the racetrack Sunday at Belmont Park, with more than 30 potential Breeders’ Cup starters working over the main track, training track, and turf.
Between grabbing some brunch, the 1 p.m. football games, and about five pounds worth of early Breeders’ Cup past performances to get familiar with, I should have enough to do through the first part of the afternoon without getting too caught up in the first half of Sunday’s Belmont card.
