Gierkink's preview: Da Silva serving suspension
Friday, Oct. 24, preview
Jockey Eurico Rosa Da Silva has dropped an appeal and will serve a three-day suspension Friday through Sunday.
Da Silva is one of four local riders with a Breeders’ Cup mount Nov. 1 at Santa Anita. The native of Brazil has the call on Something Extra in the Grade 1 BC Turf Sprint. The others are Patrick Husbands, Gary Boulanger, and Jesse Campbell.
Due to the absence of Da Silva on Nov. 1, Luis Contreras will ride probable favorite Strut the Course here in the Grade 3 Maple Leaf Stakes. David Moran picks up the mount on Moonlit Beauty, who won the Maple Leaf last year under Boulanger.
No Jackpot Hi 5 carryover
The Jackpot Hi 5 was hit Wednesday night by a single ticketholder in Mississauga, Ontario, for $235,983. Thundering Waters ($5.30) prevailed in the $6,250 claimer over Prized Humor (23-1), My Silver Badge (14-1), Accomplice (76-1), and Cytherean (24-1).
There was $30,666 bet into the tricky wager Wednesday on top of the carryover of $209,916.
Primordia can bounce back
Primordia showed nothing after getting away slowly in a first-level allowance Sept. 27, and a drop to $32,000 in the third race should enable her to get back on track.
Primordia had a productive summer, during which she won a $40,000 optional claimer after finishing a close third behind stakes winners Silent Star and Strut the Course in the Victoriana Stakes. The sudden drop isn’t all that fishy because there are limited turf opportunities left at the meet for her.

He awaited room along the inside in the stretch before closing on the favored winner Thundering Waters in his improved second outing here this year in this bottom $6,250 claimer. The veteran is worth a flier late in the meet, which is when he nearly scored at a huge price last year.
