New Ginya stands out against familiar cast in Hettinger

New Ginya wins the Yaddo at SAR Aug 27 2023

New Ginya romped by 3 3/4 lengths in the Yaddo. She faces the second- through fourth-place finishers again in the Hettinger.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – If New Ginya’s last race was a sign of things to come for the 4-year-old filly then there doesn’t figure to be much drama in Friday’s $125,000 John Hettinger Stakes for New York-bred fillies and mares scheduled for 1 1/8 miles over Aqueduct’s turf course.

But, coming off a career-top effort and stretching out just a little farther in distance, New Ginya will have a few things to prove if she’s to continue her ascension in this division.

Emily Shields
Moose Mitchell leads a strong group of sprinters Friday at Los Alamitos, dropping from a try in the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien.

Horses who rank a notch below graded stakes caliber benefit from class relief during the Los Alamitos two-week September meet that is sandwiched between summer at Del Mar and autumn at Santa Anita.

Those include three tough veteran sprinters in the starter-allowance feature Friday at Los Alamitos. Moose Mitchell, Lovesick Blues, and Principe Carlo have won a combined 22 races, a total likely to increase in race 7 at 5 1/2 furlongs.

Bernhards busy expanding Pin Oak's equine holdings and acreage

Jim and Dana Bernhard began buying Thoroughbreds in the summer of 2021, and have already found success, as the first yearling they purchased, Geaux Rocket Ride, won the Grade 1 Haskell Invitational this summer.

The Bernhards found a home base for their operations last year, purchasing the Pin Oak Stud of the late Josephine Abercrombie in Versailles, Ky. They’ve wasted no time in continuing to build their operation, ranking among the Keeneland September yearling sale’s leading buyers, and also recently adding a parcel of land to Pin Oak’s acreage.
