Skyler's Starship better prepared for rematch with El Grande O in Bongard

El Grande O at SAR Aug 27 2023
Barbara D. Livingston
El Grande O (above) had an experience edge on Skyler’s Starship when he beat him in July by 9 1/2 lengths. The difference between them could be a lot less in the Bongard.

Skyler’s Starship was no match for El Grande O when the two met in a maiden race at Belmont Park in July. Nearly three months later, Skyler’s Starship may be the main threat to El Grande O when the two meet again in Sunday’s $125,000 Bertram F. Bongard Stakes for New York-bred juveniles at Aqueduct.

The Bongard and its filly counterpart, the Joseph A. Gimma, are the co-featured events on a nine-race card that begins at 1:05 p.m. Both races are run at seven furlongs.

Merlazza returns to two turns in the Remington Oaks after finishing fourth around one turn in the Audubon Oaks at Ellis Park.

Trainer Brian Lynch is hoping Ancient Peace will have a tactical advantage Sunday when she makes her Midwest debut in the Grade 3, $200,000 Remington Park Oaks.

“I think she should be the speed of the race,” he said. “That’s what I’m seeing from here.”

The Remington Park Oaks, which will be run over 1 1/16 miles, is one of eight stakes on a 10-race card that ends with the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Derby. First post for the lone Sunday card of the meet is 3 p.m. Central.

Three look to join long list of great Hispanic horsemen

Barbara D. Livingston
John Ortiz gives some love to his Grade 1 Spinaway winner Brightwork.

Gustavo Delgado this year became the first Hispanic trainer to win the Kentucky Derby since Lazaro Barerra did it in 1978 with Affirmed.

There have been a number of successful trainers of Hispanic heritage throughout the annals of racing history, including Hall of Famers Horatio Luro, Angel Penna Sr., Barrera, and Frank “Pancho” Martin.

In celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, Daily Racing Form profiles three Hispanic trainers currently making their mark on the game.

Buck Owens goes longer on home ground

Scott Martinez/Los Alamitos
Los Alamitos will close its fall meet with a nine-race card on Sunday.

On consecutive Sundays earlier this month, Buck Owens went from a win in a 1,000-yard allowance race at Los Alamitos as the even-money favorite on Sept. 3 to a third-place finish at 67-1 in an allowance race at Del Mar a week later.

For his third start of September, Buck Owens starts on friendly territory in an allowance race at a mile for statebreds at Los Alamitos on Sunday’s final day of the two-week September meeting.

Santa Anita begins its six-week autumn meeting next Friday, a season that includes the Breeders’ Cup races on Nov. 3-4.

Fasig-Tipton California sale features catalog of 360

More than likely, there will be a significant number of yearlings sold for $100,000 or more at Tuesday’s Fasig-Tipton California fall yearlings and horses of racing age sale at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif.

The final number in that category may determine whether buyers are paying higher prices overall than in past years for racing prospects or unveiling an occasional bargain.

Hit Show is the morning-line favorite for Sunday's Grade 3 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park.

“Still going, still solid,” trainer Brad Cox said.

Never Silent will have her say in Victorian Queen

Julie Wright
Hurricane Clair was supplemented to the $100,000 Victorian Queen after winning her maiden in the Muskoka Stakes.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Never Silent heads a salty field of fillies in Sunday’s $100,000 Victorian Queen at Woodbine, one of two seven-furlong turf stakes for Ontario-sired juveniles, along with the Bull Page for the boys.

Never Silent bypassed last weekend’s Grade 1 Natalma in favor of this easier spot. She had a wide trip when closing for third in the prep for the Natalma, the 6 1/2-furlong Catch a Glimpse Stakes, for which she got an 80 Beyer Speed Figure.

Synthetic, turf form could be key to Dogwood

Coady Photography
B G Warrior comes into the Grade 3 Dogwood off an allowance victory at 6 1/2 furlongs on Sept. 2 at Kentucky Downs.

The Grade 3, $300,000 Dogwood Stakes on Saturday night at Churchill Downs provides a big opportunity. None of the nine 3-year-old fillies entered for this sprint have ever won a graded stakes race before, giving them a chance to add some black type to their page and to add their name to a list of previous winners that includes champions Covfefe (2019) and Echo Zulu (2022) in recent years.
