Dr. Schivel primed for big effort in Santa Anita Sprint Championship

Barbara D. Livingston
Dr. Schivel worked five furlongs in a bullet 58.60 seconds last week at Santa Anita ahead of the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Dr. Schivel could win the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship for the second time in three years Saturday, but he would still have a score to settle with a pair of graded winners who replaced him as the top sprinters in California.

The Chosen Vron and Anarchist, one-two over Dr. Schivel in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar this summer, will train into the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Their absence from the $200,000 Santa Anita Sprint leaves Dr. Schivel as a possible standout following a better-than-looked third in the Bing Crosby.

Choose Joy wins an overnight handicap at Gulfstream in May. She will likely be favored in Saturday's co-feature.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Although he had more lucrative options out of town for his promising 2-year-old Mattingly, trainer Joe Orseno opted for some home cooking instead, entering the multiple stakes-placed youngster against six others in the $65,000 Hollywood Beach Stakes on Saturday at Gulfstream Park.

The Hollywood Beach will be decided at five furlongs over the Tapeta course.

An 8-year-old owned and trained by Brandon Greer, Town Cruise was a memorable winner of the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile in 2021. He was pounded down to 8-1 late in the betting and promptly led all the way to prevail by 2 1/4 lengths with a 104 Beyer Speed Figure.

Macadamia, who recently won the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes, has been retired at the age of 5.

Macadamia, the 5-year-old Brazilian-bred mare who won three races at Santa Anita earlier this year, including the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes on turf on May 29, has been retired, trainer Phil D’Amato said on Wednesday.

Racing in Brazil and California, Macadamia won 5 of 13 starts and earned $444,413 for R Unicorn Stable.

D’Amato said Macadamia was recently sent to Kentucky. He said it was unclear whether she will be bred in that state in 2024 or sent to Japan where R Unicorn Stable has a base.

‘Crunch time' in Chillingworth for Breeders' Cup hopefuls

Eda will look to extend her seven-race win streak in Friday’s Grade 3 Chillingworth for trainer Bob Baffert.

ARCADIA, Calif. – The 2023 Breeders’ Cup at Santa Anita is still five weeks away, but for many BC candidates, the pressure already is on.

“It’s crunch time,” trainer Phil D’Amato said. “We’ll see how they run this weekend, then we’ll have a better picture on what we have Breeders’ Cup time.”

First up is the Grade 3 Chillingworth on Friday, opening day of the Santa Anita fall meet. The 6 1/2-furlong stakes is a prep to the BC Filly and Mare Sprint, and D’Amato-trained graded winner Elm Drive faces a formidable rival who has not lost in two years.

Jockey Antonio Fresu was granted a stay, allowing him to ride during the opening weekend at Santa Anita.

Fresu’s agent, Tom Knust, said he requested a stay from HISA regarding two rulings against Fresu in the final two weeks of the Del Mar meeting. A hearing regarding an appeal is scheduled for Oct. 4.

Less than firm turf expected for rescheduled Noble Damsel, Ashley T. Cole

Gerrymander trains at BEL June 6 2023
Barbara D. Livingston
The Noble Damsel will be Gerrymander's turf debut but she is bred for the surface and has worked well over it.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The New York Racing Association will try a second time to run the Grade 3, $150,000 Noble Damsel and $125,000 Ashley T. Cole Stakes on the turf Friday at Aqueduct, but Mother Nature may intervene yet again.

The two races were originally part of last Saturday’s 10-race card that was scrapped by NYRA due to a forecast for rain and strong winds.

The rain lingered into Tuesday and though conditions were expected to be dry Wednesday and Thursday there is a 70 percent chance of rain forecast for Friday.

Following improved effort, Commandant stays on Tapeta

Omaha Girl wins Hallandale Beach at GP Sept 24 2023
Ryan Thompson/Coglianese Photos
Omaha Girl successfuly stretched out from 5 1/2 furlongs to a mile under Samy Camacho in last Sunday's Hallandale Beach.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – A switch to the Tapeta track in his last start seems to have provided the wake-up call Commandant needed to turn his career in the right direction. The 3-year-old will try to keep that momentum going when facing seven rivals at 5 1/2 furlongs over the synthetic strip under optional-claiming and allowance conditions in a race restricted to Florida-breds on Friday at Gulfstream Park.

Top of the Charts gets some class relief

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Top of the Charts should be favored while dropping into the seventh race at Woodbine on Friday. He will compete with a tag for the time in the seven-furlong main turf sprint.

Top of the Charts looked like he could be any kind winning his first two starts at Churchill Downs in the spring of last year. However, the 4-year-old missed the second half of 2022, and after struggling this spring on the dirt in Kentucky, he was sent here to trainer Kevin Attard.

Santa Anita fall meet opens with revised betting menu

Santa Anita will offer a $3-minimum all-turf pick three wager on final three turf races each day during the fall meeting.

ARCADIA, Calif. – While the festive return of Breeders’ Cup to Santa Anita brings renewed excitement to the fall meet, horseplayers may argue the season’s biggest development is the highly anticipated comeback of two popular wagers.
