The Los Alamitos daytime Thoroughbred meet runs Friday through Sunday this week and next. First post is 1 p.m.

Finding winners is easier than filling races at Los Alamitos, which begins a two-week daytime Thoroughbred meet Friday.

While the win rate of favorites soared to 42 percent the past two years of daytime racing, field size went the other way. Los Alamitos averaged 5.86 horses per race at its June-July meet, a struggle it hopes to mitigate during the September season that runs Friday through Sunday for the next two weeks.

Barbara D. Livingston
Sacred Wish, second in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks, will make her turf debut in the Winter Memories.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Sacred Wish, a Grade 1 stakes-placed runner on dirt, will try turf for the first time in Friday’s $135,000 Winter Memories Stakes at Aqueduct. While her pedigree doesn’t necessarily scream turf, there are some things to suggest she could be live at a price in this one-mile stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

Churchill gets going again with opening of September meeting

Barbara D. Livingston
Churchill Downs will kick off a 14-day September meet on Thursday.

Churchill Downs will open its brief, 14-day September meet on Thursday, and if it’s a quiet opening, perhaps that’s because Churchill would prefer it that way.

Earlier this year, on June 2, Churchill announced that the remaining live racing days in its spring-summer meet would be held at Ellis Park, in reaction to a spate of horse deaths that had generated an intense amount of media coverage at the famous track, the home of the Kentucky Derby. Although some local horsemen complained about the move, the abrupt send-off quieted the noise.

Snap Decision’s schedule includes the Lonesome Glory on Thursday and the Grand National on Oct. 21 in Far Hills, N.J.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Despite winning two Grade 1 stakes in 2022, Snap Decision lost out on an Eclipse Award as North America’s top steeplechase horse to Hewick, whose lone North American victory came at Snap Decision’s expense in the Grade 1 Grand National at Far Hills last October.

With the goal of making Snap Decision a champion this year, trainer Jack Fisher has taken a different approach to the 9-year-old gelding’s 2023 campaign. Fisher opted to skip the Saratoga meet with Snap Decision to have a fresh horse for two Grade 1 stakes in the next five weeks.

Cash Logistics wins the $150,000 Unreachable Star Stakes in 2021.

The connections of Cash Logistics hope they can turn the clock back two years Wednesday at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

Cash Logistics roared through the late-summer and fall Indiana-restricted dirt-route stakes program in 2021, winning the $100,000 Empire Stakes by 2 1/4 lengths and the $150,000 Unreachable Star by almost six. Cash Logistics missed the 2022 Horseshoe Indianapolis meet, but in a comeback race Aug. 23 he looked like the same horse he was two summers ago. If he is, Cash Logistics will win his second Empire in the co-featured eighth race Wednesday.
