Talk to Me Jimmy on schedule for Wood

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Talk to Me Jimmy came off a three-month layoff on Feb. 6 and won the Withers by 11 lengths.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Though the workout was not officially recorded because of foggy conditions on Sunday, Withers Stakes winner Talk to Me Jimmy had an important drill last Sunday at Belmont Park for the Wood Memorial.

According to trainer Rudy Rodriguez, Talk to Me Jimmy worked five furlongs and galloped out six furlongs. But since the workout was done with the Belmont Park training track at least partially covered in fog, it will not go down as an official workout.

Rodriguez said jockey Ruben Silvera was aboard for the move.

In his 3-year-old debut last Saturday at Santa Anita, Civil Liberty finished second, beaten a neck by Crude Velocity.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The maiden Civil Liberty, third in the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity and fourth in the Grade 1 American Pharoah at Santa Anita as a 2-year-old, is pointing to the Grade 2, $750,000 Wood Memorial on April 4, trainer Doug O’Neill told New York Racing Association publicity.

In his 3-year-old debut last Saturday at Santa Anita, Civil Liberty finished second, beaten a neck by Crude Velocity, in a fastly rated 6 1/2-furlong maiden race. Civil Liberty is by Independence Hall, who won the Nashua and Jerome stakes, both one-turn mile races at Aqueduct.

Baffert gives Buetane another chance to prove himself in Virginia Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Buetane has yet to finish out of the money in four starts but has failed to win a stakes race.

Long on miles and short on stakes wins, the jet-setting colt Buetane will ramble on to Colonial Downs as the likely favorite in the $500,000 Virginia Derby on Saturday.

Though Buetane regressed in his first route attempt last time out, trainer Bob Baffert believes there’s still a path for the $1.15 million colt to reach the Kentucky Derby.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Two years ago, trainer Brian Lynch swept the three-race series for filly and mare turf sprinters held each winter during the Gulfstream Park Championship meet with Stone Silent. On Saturday, he’ll be favored to repeat that accomplishment when he sends out Moon Spun in quest of her fifth straight victory in the $125,000 Captiva Island Stakes.

Igniter well-positioned to show what he can do in Winkfield

Barbara D. Livingston
Igniter is coming off a 4 1/4-length first-level allowance win at seven furlongs on Feb. 11.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The connections of Igniter weren’t necessarily looking to cut their colt farther back in distance. They were just looking for a race.

In Saturday’s $135,000 Jimmy Winkfield Stakes for 3-year-olds at Aqueduct, the connections of Igniter appear to have found the ideal race to find out how effective their son of Volatile can be at six furlongs.

McMahon pleased with Sandy Bottom split

Jim McCue/Maryland Jockey Club
Passage East has won eight of her last nine starts.

Due to an excess of entries, the $100,000 Sandy Bottom Stakes will be split into two divisions on Saturday at Colonial Downs. Of all the trainers who took their chance in the one-mile race for older fillies and mares, it’s possible that no one benefited from the split more than trainer Hugh McMahon.

By separating the white-hot Passage East and fast-improving Think Fast between the sixth and seventh races Saturday, McMahon has been able to double his Sandy Bottom chances with a pair of 4-year-old fillies he adores. Both are owned by the similarly fortunate Larry Rabold.

Cynane steps up to take on Ms. Tart in Queen Stakes

Coady Media
Cynane will step into stakes company to challenge Ms. Tart in Saturday's Queens Stakes at Turfway.

Cynane has already defeated a few of her challengers in the $125,000 Queen Stakes on Saturday night at Turfway Park. However, she has never faced multiple stakes winner Ms. Tart.

Ms. Tart won the Grade 3 Royal North at Woodbine and the Satin and Lace at Presque Isle Downs last year for trainer Kevin Rice and owner Nathan McCauley. She was purchased for $375,000 at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale as a racing or broodmare prospect by Mulholland Springs, and transferred by the farm and new co-owner Judy Pryor to John Ennis in Kentucky.
