Leading owner Arriagada eyeing trainers' title as well

Juan Arriagada has 18 wins at the meet to lead all owners. He also has 27 training wins, three shy of leading Juan Avila.

Juan Arriagada has been the leading owner in wins at the last three Tampa Bay Downs meets. This year, he would like to add leading trainer to his résumé as well.

Arriagada won two races on Sunday’s card at Tampa – the 63rd day of the 90-day season – pulling him to within three wins, 30 to 27, of Juan Avila. Arriagada is the leading owner with 18 wins, five more than his nearest competitor. Last year, his 42 training victories were second only to Kathleen O’Connell.

The colts carry the gray and blue silks now associated with the Bernhard family, whose patriarch, Jim Bernhard, died in November.

Kontiki looks to regain rookie form in Southern Park

Kontiki finished sixth in her debut last April at Keeneland and then proceeded to win her next three starts by a combined 27 lengths.

Kontiki, who showed immense promise as a juvenile last summer in Ohio, looks to keep rounding back into form in the $75,000 Southern Park Stakes for statebred 3-year-old fillies sprinting six furlongs on Thursday at Mahoning Valley.

Kontiki, by Midshipman, was purchased by Stonestreet Farm at the 2024 Keeneland September yearling sale and is trained by Brad Cox. She finished sixth in her debut last April at Keeneland and then proceeded to win her next three starts by a combined 27 lengths.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Weather could prove the key to Sunday’s 10-race program at Gulfstream Park, which features a mandatory payout of the Rainbow 6 pool.

The sequence includes four turf races highlighted by an $87,000 allowance/optional $125,000 claiming race on the grass that goes as the penultimate leg of the sequence. Management is predicting a potential final pool of approximately $2 million assuming the popular gimmick is not hit Friday or Saturday.

East-bound Black Volt tops strong allowance

Black Volt will start in a Sunday allowance at Sunland, then ship to New York with Express Kid, who will start in the Wood Memorial.

Black Volt, a New York-bred who could ship to Aqueduct with the Wood Memorial-bound Express Kid, runs in Sunday’s second race at Sunland Park. The entry-level allowance at six furlongs also drew The Hell We Did, who is a half-brother to Senor Buscador.

Justin Evans trains both Black Volt and Express Kid and said plans are to fly Black Volt back East later this month. The horses both race for Paradise Equine Farm. Express Kid was second in last month’s Sunland Park Derby.

She opened up her season in February with a sweeping win in the $150,000 American Beauty over six furlongs, then came back and won the most prestigious race of her career in the Grade 2, $400,000 Azeri last Saturday.

Speedy Englishman to race in Thursday sprint

produced Englishman's Sept. 19 debut produced a 97 Beyer Speed Figure, among the highest figures for a 2-year-old of 2025.

The promising 3-year-old colt Englishman was entered Thursday in a first-level sprint allowance that made it onto the March 19 Fair Grounds card.

Englishman drew the outside post among nine 3-year-olds entered in race 10, carded for six furlongs and open to $125,000 claimers.
