Following this four-day week, NYRA will race Dec. 10-14 before going on holiday break from Dec. 15-25. Racing will then resume Dec. 26.

Built returns in what may be an off-the-turf sprint

Barbara D. Livingston
Built returns in Friday's feature at Fair Grounds, a turf sprint that is likely to be rained onto the dirt.

Built is back and might not need to be any better than he was in May to win the featured seventh race Friday at Fair Grounds.

Unraced since May 3, Built ran in five stakes, four graded, after clearing the maiden ranks, and his return comes in a second-level allowance. Carded for about 5 1/2 furlongs on turf, the race will likely wind up on a wet main track, with fairly heavy and sustained rain forecast Thursday into Friday.

Hernandez looking to rebound as two-week meet begins

Jockey Juan Hernandez finished second to Umberto Rispoli in the rider standings during the Del Mar fall meet.

When the Del Mar autumn meeting ended on Sunday, jockey Juan Hernandez found himself in an unfamiliar position.

Instead of winning the riding title, as he had done at the preceding five summer and autumn meetings at Del Mar, Hernandez finished sixth with nine wins, eight behind leader Umberto Rispoli.

The reboot begins Friday at Los Alamitos, the first day of the track’s two-week meeting that runs through Dec. 14.

Hernandez plans to ride regularly at Los Alamitos, though not have as many mounts as he typically does at Del Mar and Santa Anita.
