Accomplished Girl draws widest for return in Pan Zareta

Though Accomplished Girl last raced on Aug. 2, her trainer, Steve Asmussen, said he didn’t hold the mare out of action strictly to aim for the $100,000 Pan Zareta Stakes on Saturday at Fair Grounds.

“We aimed at the whole meet,” Asmussen said. “Just happy to have her back down there.”

Further Ado looks to validate maiden blowout in Kentucky Jockey Club

Coady Media
After a 20-length maiden blowout, Further Ado starts in Saturday's Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs.

Without further ado, let’s get to the sequel, though the protagonist of this story is in fact named Further Ado.

Further Ado, solid if unspectacular in two Saratoga sprints, put on a show Oct. 10 at Keeneland. Going two turns over 1 1/16 miles, Further Ado tracked the pacesetter from second, took over on the far turn, and carried a 10-length lead to the stretch call.

Weekend GamePlan: Picks for Ed Brown, Seabiscuit, Fern Creek

Barbara D. Livingston
Stradale comes into the Ed Brown off a sparkling maiden win over the Churchill surface.

Between the Del Mar turf and the Churchill dirt, plenty of meat on this Saturday’s leftover turkey bone.

This is the best one of these late November all-juvenile cards at Churchill that I can remember. Stuck with the two sprint stakes on the program, but the Kentucky Jockey Club – Further Ado versus Soldier N Diplomat versus Cherokee Nation – should be fun. Even with heavy favorite Explora out, the Golden Rod includes fillies with serious potential, especially Bella Ballerina and Atropa.

Calandagan a major foreign threat in Japan Cup

Focusonracing.com
Calandagan has won three straight Group 1 races, including the Champion at Ascot on Oct. 18.

Calandagan is on a three-race winning streak, all Group 1 races in France and Britain since early summer, an achievement that led to him being recognized as the 2025 European Horse of the Year earlier this month. It may take a Horse of the Year such as Calandagan to win Sunday’s Grade 1 Japan Cup at Tokyo Racecourse against a tough field of local horses.

Khozalite, Mythical expected to put a stamp on impressive campaigns

Barbara D. Livingston
Mythical has won 4 of 5 career starts by margins ranging from 3 1/4 lengths in the Grade 3 Adirondack at Saratoga to 12 3/4 lengths in the Susan’s Girl.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The middle legs of the Florida Sire Series five weeks ago proved to be a showcase for the talents of Khozalite and Mythical, who won their respective divisions in dominant fashion. All signs point to that being the case once again Saturday at Gulfstream Park, where the two promising juveniles will go postward as overwhelming favorites in the series finales, the $300,000 In Reality and its filly counterpart, the My Dear Girl Stakes.

City of Laurel may be a bit short for Pay Billy's return

Barbara D. Livingston
Off since the Preakness, Pay Billy makes his return Saturday in the City of Laurel.

Since taking his shot in the Preakness, trainer Mike Gorham has been immensely patient with Pay Billy, giving the 3-year-old colt six months to prepare for the next stage of his career. Once a rising star in the local ranks, the two-time stakes winner will make his long-awaited return to Laurel Park in the $100,000 City of Laurel Stakes on Saturday.

“We’ll see how the pace sets up, and hopefully he can run into it and then finish strong,” Gorham said. “That’s what I’m looking at. But I think it’s a stepping-stone for down the road where we can stretch them out a little farther.”

Star stablemates go separate ways for juvenile stakes

Michael Burns
Dixie Law has won 3 of 4 starts, including the Cup and Saucer Stakes against Canadian-bred males on the grass.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Trainer Dale Desruisseaux’s star 2-year-old fillies will go their separate ways Saturday at Woodbine when Dixie Law takes on the boys in the $250,000 Coronation Futurity and Piper’s Gift meets Canadian-bred fillies in the $250,000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes. Both should be favored under Rafael Hernandez.

Dixie Law has won 3 of 4 starts, including the Cup and Saucer Stakes against Canadian-bred males on the grass Oct. 5. The daughter of Tiz the Law is coming off a daylight score going 1 1/16 miles in her first Tapeta start in the Grade 3 Mazarine.

Test Score looks formidable in Hollywood Derby

Barbara D. Livingston
Test Score is the only graded stakes winner in the 1 1/8-mile Hollywood Derby.

Test Score ran a near-perfect race at 3-5 to win the Grade 2 Twilight Derby on turf on Oct. 25 at Santa Anita.

Test Score stalked the pace and took the lead in the final furlong, a style that he has used with consistent success and will make him a deserving favorite in Saturday’s Grade 1, $300,000 Hollywood Derby on turf at Del Mar.
