Red-hot Hartman has the value play in Attache

Coady Media
Attache has made his last four starts on turf.

It took the trainer Chris Hartman 90 starters during the 2023-24 Fair Grounds meet to hit eight winners, and Hartman needed 68 runners last season to notch seven victories. This Fair Grounds go-around has diverged sharply. Through Jan. 11, Hartman had gone 7 for 20, and Attache can give the barn another win in Thursday’s featured seventh race.

Attache meets nine rivals in a second-level dirt allowance carded for six furlongs and open to $50,000 claimers. It’s an eclectic and well-matched group, but if his 8-1 morning line holds, Attache feels like the value.

She is one of three horses in the one-mile test for fillies and mares to have previously raced at the Grade 1 level along with Just Basking and Anna’s Promise.

Express Kid, winner of the Springboard Mile, has been transferred to trainer Justin Evans and will start next in the Sunland Derby.

Express Kid, upset winner of the Springboard Mile at Remington Park on Dec. 20, has been transferred from trainer Wade Rarick to Justin Evans after being purchased for $800,000 by Brad and Sharon Kleven in a one-horse digital sale conducted by Fasig-Tipton last week.

Queen Maxima may get a break before next start after Las Cienegas win

Queen Maxima, trained by Jeff Mullins, added another victory in Sunday's Las Cienegas at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Hardly a day goes by without someone asking Jeff Mullins about Queen Maxima.

Such conversations are commonplace for the trainer of a star mare who has compiled five stakes wins in turf sprints at Churchill Downs, Del Mar, and Santa Anita in the last year. The most recent came in Sunday’s Grade 3 Las Cienegas Stakes on the hillside turf course at Santa Anita.

“Anybody who is involved in this game needs to experience a horse like this,” Mullins said in the winner’s circle. “This is something else, I mean this is a once-in-a-lifetime horse.”

Barboza hoping two turns is what Capitan Danny needs

Barbara D. Livingston
Just Beat the Odds, winner of the Elite Power Stakes at Aqueduct, will start next in the Riyadh Dirt Sprint.

Trainer Victor Barboza Jr. believes the Chilean-bred Capitan Danny will improve going two turns and he appears to have found a nice spot to find out if he’s right.

Barboza, based at Gulfstream Park, will ship Capitan Danny to Tampa Bay Downs for Wednesday’s first-level allowance/optional $16,000 claiming race going one mile and 40 yards around two turns.

Barboza raced Capitan Danny four times in one-turn mile races at Gulfstream Park last spring and early summer. The son of Mendelssohn had two seconds and two fourth-place finishes.

A rare seven-race card as field size struggles continue

Barbara D. Livingston
Aqueduct will run a rare seven-race card on Thursday with 50 pre-scratch entries.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – It’s a small sample size, perhaps, but the numbers from a field size perspective to start off the 2026 Aqueduct winter meet are disconcerting.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A veteran gelding nearing the end of his career and a lightly raced colt just getting started are key runners Thursday in split divisions of a California-bred allowance turf sprint at Santa Anita.

Jetovator, a 10-year-old gelding, and Berlin Wall, a 4-year-old colt, are program favorites in races 3 and 7, respectively. Thursday is a make-up day for a rain cancellation, and the start of a Thursday-through-Monday race week.
