Beckman trying to cure seconditis with Drexel Hill in Wayward Lass

Barbara D. Livingston
Drexel Hill, second in the Kentucky Oaks and Mother Goose last out, returns for Saturday's Wayward Lass at Tampa Bay Downs.

Trainer Whit Beckman hopes Drexel Hill is the cure for his lengthy bout with seconditis when he sends the 2025 Kentucky Oaks runner-up out as the likely favorite in Saturday’s $125,000 Wayward Lass Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.

The Wayward Lass, at 1 1/16 miles, is the co-feature on a race card that includes the $125,000 Gasparilla Stakes for 3-year-old fillies. The $125,000 Pasco Stakes, for 3-year-old males, did not draw enough entries to fill for Saturday.

Buetane expected to continue Baffert's San Vicente dominance

Barbara D. Livingston
Buetane will look to give trainer Bob Baffert his 15th win in the San Vicente on Saturday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A winter sprint stakes for 3-year-olds at Santa Anita, the Grade 2 San Vicente looks the same every year – small fields, short prices, Bob Baffert-trained winners.

The cycle repeats Saturday when Grade 1-placed Buetane returns as the San Vicente favorite. The race drew five runners, which is average for the San Vicente the past decade. Baffert-trained favorites have won five of the last six; he has won the stakes a record 14 times.

Morley, Rice well-stocked for trio of allowances

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
For the Ladies won her second career start, a maiden race, by 7 1/4 lengths on Nov. 29.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – There is not a stakes race on Saturday’s nine-race program at Aqueduct, but there are a few horses on the card who will likely turn up in stakes on future Saturdays later in the meet.

In For the Ladies and Interstatelovesong, trainer Tom Morley has two 3-year-old fillies he hopes have stakes in their future. Both are entered in a first-level allowance race at six furlongs that goes as race 2. Whether both front-running types run remains to be seen, but either has the ability to win Saturday.

Baffert will be tough to beat in Santa Ynez

Barbara D. Livingston
Explora, runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, would be the eighth straight favorite to win the seven-furlong Santa Ynez.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Even though the $100,000 Santa Ynez Stakes was postponed six days and includes the late entry of a Grade 1 winner, the season’s first dirt stakes for 3-year-old fillies in California is likely to produce a predictable result Saturday at Santa Anita.

Explora, runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, would be the eighth straight favorite to win the seven-furlong Santa Ynez, though the race got tougher when it was redrawn.

Preakness-host season begins with winter meet

Barbara D. Livingston
In 2027 when the Pimlico rebuild is complete, racing is scheduled to cease permanently at Laurel Park.

Laurel Park will kick off its 2026 winter meet with a 10-race card Friday, featuring a $53,000 allowance for older fillies and mares and three races restricted to new 3-year-olds. In the twilight of its 115-year lifespan, the track is preparing for one of its biggest years to date.

To maximize the number of races per card during the quietest part of the racing year, Laurel will conduct racing on Fridays and Saturdays through January. Sunday cards will be added in February.
