Debra A. Roma
Magnitude, winner of the Risen Star and Clark Stakes, will start next in the $20 million Saudi Cup.

Magnitude, one of the more interesting older dirt-route horses in North America, remains on course to leave North America for his 4-year-old debut.

Magnitude’s connections secured a spot in the $20 million Saudi Cup on Feb. 14 at King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh and Magnitude has so far hit every mark preparing for the race.

“He’s been training great. He flies over on Feb. 2,” said Steve Asmussen, who trains Magnitude for Ron Winchell’s Winchell Thoroughbreds.

A 6-year-old mare, Mrs. Astor will be heavily favored to win Monday’s $100,000 Astra Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on turf for fillies and mares at Santa Anita. Whether she races again in coming months was unclear Friday.

“I don’t know if this is going to be her last race,” trainer Jonathan Thomas said. “I don’t think we need to get her to Kentucky until March or the beginning of April.

“We’ll let her determine that in the next few months.”

CTBA Winter Mixed Sale features plenty of juveniles

Juveniles are expected to dominate Tuesday’s Winter Mixed Sale at Fairplex in Pomona, Calif., one of two annual sales held in the state.

Of the 203 horses in the catalog and on the list of supplemental entries, there are 120 2-year-olds, 35 yearlings, 27 broodmares, 10 3-year-olds, eight 4-year-olds, and three 5-year-olds.

The absence of a 2-year-olds in training sale in California since 2021 has led numerous consignors in the state to offer early year juveniles at the Winter Mixed Sale, conducted by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association.

Wayne Potts has runners in the fourth and sixth races on Aqueduct's Sunday card.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Trainer Wayne Potts registered his 700th career win here on Thursday and at the rate he’s going, it may not take long to get 800.

When Autumn’s Turn won her second race in 12 days on Thursday, after losing her first 26 starts, it was the fourth win from five starters at the winter meet for Potts, who then did lose another race when Amber Elite finished fifth later on Thursday.

On Sunday’s eight-race card at Aqueduct, Potts has two runners in both the fourth and sixth races.

C W Prize wins at RP Dec 5 2025

C W Prize (above) is shortening up in distance for the Highland Ice and may have to run down expected pacesetter Wildatlanticstorm.

C W Prize might have to reel in Wildatlanticstorm to win the $50,000 Highland Ice for the second year in a row Monday at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla.

At least that’s one take on the six-furlong race for 3-year-olds and up. There are other ways to read the race, which drew a diverse field of nine. Many are coming out of strong races at Oaklawn Park, where Spankster and Rexford faced a tough Bourbon Bash in the Commodore overnight stakes on Jan. 3.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Attfield, last seen winning the Central Park Stakes on turf at Aqueduct on Nov. 7, returned to the work tab Thursday at Belmont Park, breezing a half-mile in 49.90 seconds over the training track.

While it was Attfield’s first official work of his 3-year-old season, trainer Tom Morley said the horse “had a little leg-stretcher” last week.

Stakes-less Sunday card offers wagering appeal

Marian Cross is the one to beat in a first-level allowance turf sprint Sunday at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Maiden races compose most of the Sunday card at Santa Anita, a nine-race parimutuel appetizer before the main sporting event of the afternoon – the NFL playoff game in which the visiting Los Angeles Rams are likely to eliminate the Chicago Bears.

To cash on the Rams, bettors must lay 3.5 points and risk $110 to win $100. The odds are more appealing at Santa Anita, particularly on a second-start maiden in race 1, a comeback allowance filly who is barely eligible in race 5, and a $16,000 claiming veteran that stands out in race 8.
