Chip Honcho to continue on to Risen Star after tough-trip Lecomte

Coady Media
Chip Honcho will remain on the Fair Grounds path to the Kentucky Derby with his next start in the Risen Star.

Chip Honcho, despite finishing fourth in the Lecomte Stakes on Jan. 17, will continue down the road to the Louisiana Derby and make his next start Feb. 14 in the Risen Star, trainer Steve Asmussen said.

Winner of the Gun Runner in December, Chip Honcho broke poorly from post 10 in the Lecomte, got caught four wide on the first turn, failed to settle after turning onto the backstretch, raced wide again on the far turn, and still lost by just 1 3/4 lengths.

Sovereignty is in training with Bill Mott at Payson Park. He is galloping daily but a few weeks away from a workout.

INDIANTOWN, Fla. – Unlike a year ago, trainer Bill Mott does not have a wish list of races in which he’d like to run Sovereignty in 2026.

Okay, maybe one.

“I’d like to make the Breeders’ Cup Classic at the end of the year and whatever makes any kind of sense in between,” Mott said the day before Sovereignty was crowned 2025 Horse of the Year and 3-year-old champion male at Thursday’s Eclipse Awards ceremony at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Fla.

Hey Nay Nay can regain winning form in Baffle Stakes

Debra A. Roma
Hey Nay Nay began his career by winning a maiden sprint at Santa Anita, the Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park, and the Del Mar Juvenile Turf.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Sunday is redemption day at Santa Anita for a stakes-winning colt who emerged as a top juvenile last summer on turf before he missed twice in fall.

Hey Nay Nay returns in the $100,000 Baffle Stakes, a hillside sprint for 3-year-olds won by favorites the last five years. To make it six, Hey Nay Nay must catch lightly raced front-runner Greenwich Village and hold off stakes-winning late-runner Later Than Planned. Simple enough.

My Boy Prince gets significant cutback for Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint

Barbara D. Livingston
Multiple Grade 1-placed My Boy Prince shortens up to five furlongs for Saturday's Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Talk about your turnbacks.

When My Boy Prince runs in Saturday’s $175,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint Stakes, he will be cutting back to five furlongs after attempting 1 1/2 miles in the Grade 1 Canadian International last October at Woodbine.

The chart said My Boy Prince took a funny step at three-furlong pole of the International, but truth be told, he was backing up by that point anyway. My Boy Prince was eased out of the race and did walk off the course under his own power and was none the worse for wear, according to trainer Mark Casse.

Lightly raced Lucille Ball looks to stay perfect in Interborough

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Lucille Ball won an $83,000 allowance by 10 1/4 lengths with a 103 Beyer Speed Figure on Jan. 2 in her first race off a 14-month layoff.

When 4-year-old filly Lucille Ball entered the gate at Aqueduct for her long-awaited return Jan. 2, she was even a mystery to her trainer. Chris Englehart didn’t know what to expect from her off a 14-month layoff, leaving him all the more flummoxed when she kicked clear to win an $83,000 allowance by 10 1/4 lengths with a 103 Beyer Speed Figure.

“I was hoping she could win,” Englehart said. “But when they’re off that long and had double [knee] surgery, you can’t expect that. It was a nice surprise.”
