Defending Toboggan winner a question mark due to weather

Barbara D. Livingston
Weigh the Risks has become a tiger on dirt, winning 6 of 7 by almost 30 combined lengths.

Even if the New York Racing Association goes forth with Saturday’s program at Aqueduct, the defending champion in the seven-furlong Toboggan Stakes might not be going to this year’s renewal.

Maximus Meridius, who won the 2025 Toboggan by a neck, is among six entrants in the $150,000 Toboggan, but to run in the $150,000 race, he must ship very early Saturday morning from trainer Butch Reid’s base at Parx Racing in Bensalem, Pennsylvania. Reid guesses the 100-mile journey would begin at about 4 a.m., when the temperature’s forecast to be about 4 degrees.

Capuano audibles to Spectacular Bid with Hollywood Import, Wild Warrior

Jeffrey Snyder / Maryland Jockey Club
Off a victory in the Heft Stakes, Hollywood Import looks tough in Saturday's Spectacular Bid at Laurel.

Trainer Gary Capuano worked hard to prepare 3-year-old colts Hollywood Import and Wild Warrior for the $200,000 Withers at Aqueduct, but adverse weather and a tight training schedule left him with too much to do. Back home at Laurel Park, the promising pair will instead make their 2026 debuts as key contenders in the $100,000 Spectacular Bid Stakes on Saturday.

Tom's Magic faces first test against older horses in Tampa Bay Stakes

Julie Wright
Tom’s Magic had a good, bordering on great, 3-year-old campaign.

Trainer Michael Stidham is going to do his best to keep stakes winners Tom’s Magic and Montador apart this year. With Montador pointing to the Fair Grounds Stakes on Feb. 14, Stidham has opted to ship newly turned 4-year-old Tom’s Magic to Florida for Saturday’s Grade 3, $175,000 Tampa Bay Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.

Tom’s Magic had a good, bordering on great, 3-year-old campaign. He won three stakes and was runner-up in the King’s Plate at Woodbine and in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby, in which he was beaten a neck by Salamis right on the wire.

Redland Rebels showed a nice turn of foot winning his maiden in early August at Gulfstream. He makes his first start since that effort in the Kitten's Joy Stakes.

Fourth-place Captain Cook ran best among the newly turned 4-year-olds in the Pegasus last weekend. The others, Disco Time and Tappan Street, finished, respectively, eighth and 12th. Tappan Street’s the last horse to beat Sovereignty, and some are treating the Pegasus like a referendum on the 3-year-old class of 2025.

Megahertz a prime bounce-back opportunity for Public Assembly, Vibez

Benoit Photo
Vibez is qualified to win the Megahertz despite a next-to-last finish in the Matriarch two months ago at Del Mar.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Horses sometimes lose because of bad trips, other times they get outrun by better rivals. Both apply in the Grade 3 Megahertz Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita.

The main entrants in the filly-mare turf mile benefit by more favorable conditions than in off-the-board finishes last out. Public Assembly broke tardily, fell too far behind a slow pace, and finished fifth in the Grade 3 Robert J. Frankel. Vibez was too far up in class and finished eighth in the Grade 1 Matriarch.
