Capuano has dangerous trio in rescheduled Spectacular Bid

Jeffrey Snyder / Maryland Jockey Club
Hollywood Import leads a Gary Capuano-trained trio for Wednesday's Spectacular Bid at Laurel.

Even after abandoning plans to ship to Aqueduct, trainer Gary Capuano never thought there was a chance that he was getting horses on the track at Laurel Park on Saturday. He might have better luck on a rescheduled Wednesday card, where he has three contenders in the $100,000 Spectacular Bid Stakes.

Surfin' U. S. A.'s maiden win was emotional for the family and friends of the late handicapper and broadcaster Jeff Siegel.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Surfin’ U. S. A., a 3-year-old filly owned by the estate of the late racing handicapper and commentator Jeff Siegel and longtime Los Angeles Times sportswriter Eric Sondheimer, won a maiden race at 6 1/2 furlongs on turf Sunday.

A 3-year-old filly, Surfin’ U. S. A., trained by Leonard Powell, closed from sixth of eight to win by a head at 4-1. Sunday’s race was Surfin’ U. S. A.’s fifth start, and second of the year. She was a troubled fourth in a maiden race at six furlongs on turf Jan. 11.

Siegel died in October after a lengthy illness. He was 74.

Princesa Moche's win in Saturday's Megahertz Stakes gave trainer Doug O'Neill 15 wins in the month of January

ARCADIA, Calif. – Trainer Doug O’Neill capped a successful January with a victory by Princesa Moche in Saturday’s Grade 3 Megahertz Stakes for fillies and mares on turf at Santa Anita.

Princesa Moche, a 6-year-old Peruvian-bred mare, was O’Neill’s 15th win of the month. Through Sunday, he led the trainer standings at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting.

Princesa Moche was favored in the $102,000 Megahertz, a role that seemed far-fetched when she was imported from South America last summer.

The Big Game Futures & Longshots: Betting Value Beyond the Favorites

With The Big Game approaching, the futures market looks nothing like it did back in September. The Seattle and New England weren’t just overlooked - they were written off. Seattle opened the season around 60/1, while New England was even deeper at 80/1, making this one of the least expected Big Game matchups in modern NFL history.

That unlikely path to the championship has created a futures board filled with intrigue, value, and rare longshot opportunities.

Dream meet continues for Lynch at Gulfstream

Barbara D. Livingston
Sister Troienne has won five straight and is a likely candidate for the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Trainer Brian Lynch has been running horses at Gulfstream Park for 20 years, but this winter is certain to go down as his best meet yet.

Through Sunday – day 40 of the 72-day winter season – Lynch has 18 wins from 48 starters, a .375 winning percentage that is tops among trainers who have made at least eight starts. His 18 wins are fourth best in that category. At the 2023-24 meet, Lynch won 22 races from 95 starters, so he figures to top his personal-best win total at Gulfstream.
