Lonesome Road hugely improved after getting gelded, shifting to dirt

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Michael Trombetta said he is considering entering Lonesome Road in a stakes at Laurel or Aqueduct soon.

When Lonesome Road was gelded after two maiden races on turf at Colonial Downs last summer, trainer Michael Trombetta knew that he would have to run on dirt when he returned in the winter. He said he wasn’t concerned, though that’s much easier to say now.

HALLANDALE BEACH Fla. – Anyone who wasn’t actually here to see Tululo’s career debut last spring might want to watch the replay before handicapping Friday’s $54,000 main event at Gulfstream Park. The first-level allowance race is restricted to 3-year-old Florida-bred fillies and will be run at 5 1/2 furlongs over the Tapeta course.

Burnham Square back on work tab for turf-focused campaign

Barbara D. Livingston
Blue Grass winner Burnham Square will focus on a turf campaign this year, coming off a runner-up finish in the Nashville Derby.

A year ago at this time, Burnham Square was developing into a Kentucky Derby candidate, winning the Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes five weeks after romping to a maiden victory. Burnham Square, who went on to win the Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakes, made it to the Kentucky Derby but had a tough trip and finished sixth.

As a new class of 3-year-old Kentucky Derby hopefuls will attempt the Holy Bull Stakes on Saturday at Gulfstream Park, Burnham Square has started gearing up for a 4-year-old campaign, the focus of which will be turf.

Napoleon Solo nearing return as Summers ponders options

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer Chad Summers has a trio of Kentucky Derby prep races as spots for Napoleon Solo's return.

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – Napoleon Solo, unbeaten in two starts as a 2-year-old including a powerful victory in the Grade 1 Champagne at Aqueduct last October, is working his way toward his 3-year-old debut, which will likely come in the next four to six weeks.

On Wednesday, Napoleon Solo breezed a half-mile in 49.05 seconds at the Palm Meadows training center. It was Napoleon Solo’s third breeze of the year and first beyond three furlongs. Trainer Chad Summers said he caught Napoleon Solo’s last quarter in 24 seconds and had him galloping out six furlongs in 1:16.

Colloquial continues to work toward comeback

Barbara D. Livingston
Trainer George Weaver is preparing Lafayette winner Colloquial for return to the races.

Colloquial, unraced since winning the Lafayette Stakes last April at Keeneland, is on the comeback trail.

The lightly raced 4-year-old son of Vekoma worked a half-mile in 51.67 seconds on Jan. 23 at the Palm Beach Downs training center, his third breeze of the year and second at the track.

“He’s doing very well, the time off did him very well,” trainer George Weaver said.

Colloquial was scratched from the Grade 1 Woody Stephens last June at Saratoga after developing lameness in his right foreleg.

Goodgollytizmolly seeks breakthrough after promising debut

Barbara D. Livingston
Santa Anita has an eight-race card with a first post of 3:30 p.m. Eastern on Friday.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Siblings to Grade 1 winners naturally begin careers with high hopes, and the runner-up debut by Goodgollytizmolly suggests those hopes are justified.

Goodgollytizmolly, by Clubhouse Ride and a sibling to retired millionaire sprinter The Chosen Vron, makes her second start Friday in the featured seventh race at Santa Anita. Ian Kruljac trains Goodgollytizmolly, who showed plenty first out, though she lost by more than five lengths.

“It was a really great schooling for her,” Kruljac said. “My dad always gave them the first race, so I’ve adopted that.”

Carlos David's dream meet continues as Hawk circles in

Code Review wins debut at GP Jan 25 2026
Barbara D. Livingston
Saffie Joseph Jr., tied for the training lead, sent out impressive debut winner Code Review on Sunday at Gulfstream Park.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – If you had told Carlos David that he would be sitting atop the trainer standings after the first two months of the Gulfstream Park Championship meet, he probably would have laughed at the notion. With a barn of just 35 horses, he didn’t figure to be able to compete against the juggernaut stables of Saffie Joseph Jr., Todd Pletcher, Mark Casse, Brad Cox, and Jose D’Angelo during the premier winter session in the country.
