The Maryland Jockey Club and Maryland Horsemen’s Association have announced that purses for four stakes at Laurel Park on June 27, including the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash, will be increased by $25,000.

A pair of dissimilar $100,000 stakes top the Thursday card at Santa Anita as the long winter-spring racing season meanders toward closing day. The first stakes race Thursday is the Desert Stormer, race 2, a filly and mare sprint. The second stakes, the Affirmed, race 8, is a route for 3-year-olds that includes a sprinter with a longshot chance to steal the first route of his brief career.

Making his first start as a gelding, Grade-1 placed Iron Man Cal scored his first victory since 2024 on Sunday at Santa Anita. Runner-up in the 2024 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, Iron Man Cal won a deep second-level allowance on Sunday and may return to stakes this summer at Del Mar.

The hottest stable at Santa Anita the past three weeks will enter summer with momentum. Trainer John Sadler has won with 13 of his last 22 starters, and even the ones that fell short are likely to improve when the circuit moves to Del Mar next month.

Jimmy P, who has won the last two runnings of the Jonathan Sheppard, won the Grade 1 Beverly Steinman Hurdle at Saratoga on June 3 for his first win of the year. Trainer Keri Brion was quick to state that the Sheppard on Sept. 2 is the next objective with the 8-year-old Jimmy P.

Grand Job set the pace in Friday's Bed o' Roses Stakes before she was caught at the finish. The problem for trainer Bill Mott and the partnership that owns Grand Job is that their next objective – the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes at seven furlongs at Saratoga on Aug. 29 – may also include winner Ways and Means.
