Seven geldings who ran in the A.P. Smithwick Memorial here three weeks ago will reconvene in Thursday’s Grade 1, $150,000 New York Turf Writers Cup at 2 3/8 miles over the jumps.
The good news is the conditions are fast and firm, with only a wisp of a rain chance today. The bad news: There’s not much heft to the card. The late pick four is the multirace exotics sequence I find most appealing on Wednesday’s card at Saratoga, so here goes:
The second and third races are both scheduled for seven furlongs in lane 2 on the grass. There is rain in the forecast for Wednesday, but it would probably take significant rainfall for those events to be moved to the Polytrack.
Of all the multirace gimmick wagers at Del Mar on Wednesday, it is the late pick four that this horseplayer finds most appealing. Form is established in most of the races in the sequence, races 5 through 8, with the exception of the sixth race for maiden 2-year-olds.
