Free: Del Mar horses to watch for week of July 11
The winners of the six graded stakes Saturday at Belmont Park literally came from around the country and from across the globe. Many had returned to their home bases by Sunday morning, while others were scheduled to return home or relocate in the coming days.

Let’s face it: When turf racing ended three weeks ago at Santa Anita, a tailspin began. Small fields are unattractive. Field sizes at Santa Anita are low. That sums it up. Before turf racing ended June 19, the average field size was 7.5 starters per race. Since then, on dirt only, the average field size has dwindled to 6.4.
Masochistic and Firing Line return this weekend, burdened by lofty expectations. Both are odds-on favorites making their first start of the season – Masochistic in race 7 Friday, and Firing Line in race 4 Saturday.

The Dwyer Stakes, Suburban Handicap, and Belmont Sprint Championship look enticing on Saturday at Belmont Park. In each race I like horses that seem likely to be overlooked by bettors for one reason or another, ranging from 5-1 to 10-1 on the track's morning line.
