Free: Del Mar horses to watch for week of July 18
VEILED HEAT
Trainer: Jerry Fanning
Last race: July 15, 2nd
Finish: 2nd by 3 1/4
Beyer: 49
This 2-year-old Cal-bred was tons best in her debut. Broke last, made a middle move, took dirt inside, finished with run on the inside, and galloped out in front. Unusual Heat filly can run.
KARMA KING
Trainer: Brian Koriner
Last race: July 15, 7th
Finish: 2nd by 1 1/2
Beyer: 87
Two turns is too far for this sprinter, but he ran super in this N1X route. Pressed a fast pace, made the lead on the far turn, and got worn down. Del Mar horse for course can be followed, preferably at one turn.
CLOSE TO MIDNIGHT
Trainer: Craig Lewis
Last race: July 16, 6th
Finish: 4th by 8 1/4
Beyer: 44
This debut 2-year-old ran like he needed a start. Not quick early, he made a little move on the turn, raced greenly in the lane, and finished on his own. Expect major improvement next time out.
NOTED AND QUOTED
Trainer: Bob Baffert
Last race: July 16, 8th
Finish: 4th by 3 1/2
Beyer: 64
This debut 2-year-old filly ran super. Bumped and squeezed at the break, she lost position, weaved through traffic, and finished with run. This was an outstanding debut, albeit a loss.
STRAIGHT FIRE
Trainer: Keith Desormeaux
Last race: July 17, 8th
Finish: 2nd by 5 1/4
Beyer: 87
A 2-year-old first-time starter, this colt ran a winning rac,e finishing more than five lengths clear of third in a five-furlong sprint won in track-record time. He has much potential.
