BALTIMORE – Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey admitted to allowing himself to dream about the possibility of going for a Triple Crown with Kentucky Derby winner Orb in the June 8 Belmont Stakes.
“I tried to focus on today the whole time, but I wouldn’t be telling you the truth if I didn’t think down the line a little bit,” McGaughey said. “I thought if we could get it done today, that going back to Belmont, we would really be comfortable there, and we would really have a big chance.”

BALTIMORE – On a gray day at Pimlico, the Sunshine Boys ruled.
Jockey Gary Stevens, who came out of a seven-year retirement in January, and trainer D. Wayne Lukas, still going strong at age 77, put added shine on their Hall of Fame careers and put an end to the Triple Crown aspirations of Orb by teaming to win the138th Preakness Stakes on Saturday at Pimlico Race Course with the 15-1 longshot Oxbow.
BALTIMORE - It had been mentioned to trainer Bob Baffert early on Saturday that speed wasn’t very good at Pimlico.
“Hey, wait til Zee Bros gets on it,” Baffert responded.
Zee Bros, with Martin Garcia up, made a slow track look quick as he blitzed his eight rivals with a front-running 2 1/4-length victory in the $100,000 Chick Lang Stakes for 3-year-old sprinters.

BALTIMORE – The 13-race Preakness Stakes card at Pimlico Race Course could see a change in weather patterns from the cloudy skies and 70-degree temperatures the program opened under at 10:45 a.m. Eastern.

There is a high likelihood of rain moving in around 5 p.m., with the precipitation potentially continuing into the 6 p.m. block, according to an hourly weather forecast from weather.com. The Preakness is scheduled for 6:18 p.m. Eastern.
BALTIMORE - Kentucky Derby winner Orb was out for light exercise Saturday morning at Pimlico Race Course, some 12 hours before he is to run in the Grade 1, $1 million Preakness Stakes. He was one of a handful of horses that trained during an abbreviated session. Others training included Departing and Goldencents.
A field of nine, headed by Kentucky Derby winner Orb, will contest the Preakness Stakes, second leg of the Triple Crown, Saturday at Pimlico Race Course.
