OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The New York jockey colony will go through a transition over the next few months and one who hopes to make an impact is Lane Luzzi, who will plans to ride full-time at Aqueduct’s winter meet.

Luzzi, the son of veteran rider Mike Luzzi, rode in the Mid-Atlantic region this summer, and rode one race Thursday at Aqueduct, finishing second aboard the 9-year-old Hammerin Aamer in a $12,500 claimer.

“I’m getting my feet wet these next few weeks,” Luzzi, 26, said after that race. “The goal is eventually the winter meet.”

Steal Sunshine returns to Gulfstream Park on Saturday in an allowance/optional-claiming race.

Weekend GamePlan for Oct. 14, 2023: Picks for Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup, Sands Point, Ontario Matron

Lindy handled an off course in winning an allowance at Kentucky Downs, but is capable of handling any ground.

All of racing’s momentum moves toward the Breeders’ Cup at this point in autumn, but there are important stakes races still to be run in October.

Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup

Hard to imagine this race, which in many recent years has come up somewhat soft, would attract a field this deep and this strong. To me, the American fillies, those that have campaigned here all season, are going to struggle to contend. Mission of Joy is due for a bounce-back race at a price, but I can’t see her winning.

Bubble Rock gets back to some softer company in Saturday’s $125,000 Floral Park Stakes at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Brad Cox had some mixed emotions when he saw the entries for Saturday’s $125,000 Floral Park Stakes at Aqueduct.

Cox wasn’t thrilled with the fact his filly Bubble Rock drew the rail but he was excited not to see Roses for Debra in the six-furlong turf race.

In her last two starts, Bubble Rock has been defeated by Roses for Debra, a filly who is being pointed to the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 4.

Rose Dawson looks to build on last in California Distaff

Rose Dawson is the horse to beat in Saturday's $100,000 California Distaff Handicap at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Rose Dawson’s career sank like the Titanic after she won her first two starts, including a $200,000 California-bred stakes. She lost her next eight.

“She kind of soured on us last year,” trainer Phil D’Amato acknowledged. “She was good at 2, then tailed off at 3. We freshened her up, and she’s a different filly now. She’s more mature.”

Wet track shouldn't bother Double Crown in Maryland Million Classic

Jerry Dzierwinski/Maryland Jockey Club
Double Crown normally likes his races close together, but comes into the Maryland Million Classic off a 34-day layoff.

Double Crown, winner of last year’s Grade 2 Kelso Handicap, is the morning-line favorite in Laurel’s $150,000 Maryland Million Classic for 3-year-olds and up at 1 1/8 miles.

The Classic headlines a 12-race Saturday program for Maryland-sired or statebred performers that includes eight stakes.

As of Thursday, there is a 94 percent chance of rain.

Double Crown shouldn’t mind a wet track after capturing the Polynesian on good going Sept. 10 at Pimlico. That was Double Crown’s fourth race in 28 days, and first off just a six-day layoff.
