Noted back on turf in Bourbon following a stakes victory on dirt

Bill Denver/EQUI-PHOTO
Noted comes into the Bourbon Stakes off a pair of two-turn wins, a turf maiden race at Saratoga and the one-mile Sapling (above) on dirt at Monmouth Park.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – It’s a nice problem to have. Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher and one of his longtime owners, the ebullient Mike Repole, have so many promising 2-year-old colts that they’ve had to get creative to give each a path toward the Breeders’ Cup.

On Saturday, Fierceness will run in the Grade 1 Champagne at Aqueduct, Locked in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland, and Be You in the Grade 1 American Pharoah at Santa Anita. On Sunday, Noted gets his shot to move forward in the Grade 2, $350,000 Bourbon Stakes on the Keeneland turf.

Flattery faces tough Surfer Girl field in Breeders' Cup prep

Benoit Photo
Flattery will have to battle a tough field in Sunday's Surfer Girl Stakes, before a try in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

In a maiden race on Aug. 19 and again in her stakes debut in the Del Mar Juvenile Fillies Turf on Sept. 9, Flattery won twice with impressive rallies that carried her to the front with room to spare.

The same style could lead to a win in Sunday’s Grade 3 Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita and a start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf on Nov. 3 there.

“I’m glad I’m running her to get a little more experience for her,” trainer Peter Eurton said.

Randomized wins the 1 1/4-mile Alabama. She is using the nine-furlong Beldame to get to the BC Distaff.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Randomized looks very much to have things her own way on the front end when she meets just three rivals in Sunday’s Grade 2, $250,000 Beldame Stakes at Aqueduct.

Randomized, trained by Chad Brown for Seth Klarman, upset Wet Paint in the Grade 1 Alabama at Saratoga, taking control of the race from the outset under Joel Rosario and cruising to a four-length victory.

It was the second straight victory and third from five starts overall for the 3-year-old daughter of Nyquist. She is 3 for 3 when able to get the early lead, 0 for 2 when she isn’t.

Noble Damsel comes back with change in cast

Julie Wright
Fluffy Socks is one of three horses Chad Brown entered in the Noble Damsel.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – There will be a third attempt to run the Grade 3, $150,000 Noble Damsel Stakes on Sunday at Aqueduct, and the field has undergone some renovations since it was originally scheduled two weeks ago.

Originally drawn for Sept. 23 with a field of nine, the Noble Damsel was postponed when that card was canceled due to rain. Rescheduled for Sept. 29 with basically the same cast, the one-mile turf race was again lost when historic rainfall hit Queens, forcing the New York Racing Association to cancel the Sept. 29 card and move the Sept. 30 card to the following day.

Pletcher has another strong hand in Spinster with Nest

Debra A. Roma
Nest wins her comeback race in the Grade 2 Shuvee at Saratoga.

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Not to date the man, but it was in 2007 that Todd Pletcher trained his first winner of the Spinster Stakes, Panty Raid. Sixteen years, that’s a pretty long time, and you can measure it through generations of racehorses

Panty Raid now is the dam of Proxy, a hopeful for the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Proxy is the sixth named foal from Panty Raid, and on Sunday, Pletcher seeks his sixth Spinster with Nest.

Moira back in top form for E.P. Taylor

Julie Wright
Moira got back on track with this victory in the Canadian Stakes.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario –Reigning Canadian Horse of the Year Moira showed her true colors last out with a dominant score in the Grade 2 Canadian. The powerful bay will try to make amends for her frustrating run in last year’s Grade 1 E.P. Taylor in this year’s edition of the $750,000 turf event for fillies and mares on Sunday.

Nations Pride at WO Oct 6 2023
Michael Burns
Nations Pride trains at Woodbine. He has raced only once since March, a Group 1 victory in Munich, Germany, on July 30.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The 50th anniversary of Secretariat’s triumphant final start in the 1973 Canadian International will be celebrated at Woodbine on Sunday, and an exhibit honoring his achievements has been on display this week.

The historic Grade 1 turf event returns from a one-year hiatus with a $750,000 purse at the shortened distance of 1 1/4 miles, which is right up the alley of favored English raider Nations Pride.

Talented but green Life Talk moves on to Frizette

Life Talk wins maiden at SAR Aug 31 2023
Barbara D. Livingston
Life Talk veered inward during the stretch run of her maiden win, but Todd Pletcher believes she is making progress.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Life Talk brings experience, a win at the distance, and the backing of solid connections into Saturday’s Grade 1, $400,000 Frizette Stakes at Aqueduct.

A daughter of Gun Runner, Life Talk has displayed signs of greenness in her first two starts, both at Saratoga. In her 6 1/2-furlong debut on July 30, she was beaten a head by Alys Beach in a race where she lost position at the start and had to rally wide yet still looked like a winner in deep stretch only to get denied on the wire.

Regardless of ground, Rebel's Romance ready for Joe Hirsch Turf Classic

Rebel's Romance-Richard Mullen during Bowling Green at SAR July 30 2023
Barbara D. Livingston
Richard Mullen (above) was unseated when Rebel’s Romance stumbled in the Bowling Green. William Buick rides Saturday.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Delayed one week by historic rainfall in the area, Saturday’s rescheduled Grade 1, $500,000 Joe Hirsch Stakes at 1 1/2 miles over Aqueduct’s outer turf course could again be impacted by wet weather.

Rain was forecast Friday and Saturday, though not nearly the 8.65 inches that fell last weekend, which forced the cancellation of two Aqueduct cards and the rescheduling of a third.

Rebel’s Romance, at least last year, proved effective over both soft and firm ground, winning 5 of 7 starts including the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland.

Master of The Seas tries to fill big shoes for his connections

Julie Wright
Master of The Seas earned a berth in the Breeders’ Cup Mile with this victory in the Grade 1 Woodbine Mile on Sept. 16.

Master of The Seas is nowhere near the best miler in Europe but may be favored to beat the best male turf horse in America, Up to the Mark, on Saturday.

Those two and seven others, among them 2022 race winner Annapolis, square off in the featured Grade 1, $1 million Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland.
