Danse Macabre enters rescheduled Glen Cove off sharp comeback run

Barbara D. Livingston
Danse Macabre (outside) returned from a four-month layoff to finish second in the Music City Stakes at Kentucky Downs.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – A few dry and breezy days should allow for the return of turf racing Thursday at Aqueduct, where five of the nine races are scheduled for the grass, including the rescheduled $125,000 Glen Cove Stakes for 3-year-old filly sprinters.

The Glen Gove, at six furlongs, was originally scheduled for Sunday but neither it nor the Grade 3 Knickerbocker was carded due to the forecast of Saturday rain that indeed arrived and forced all but one of eight scheduled weekend turf races to the dirt.

Mackillop rounding into form, gets preferred distance

Tom Keyser
Mackillop stretches out to 1 1/16 miles for the first time under trainer Ian Wilkes.

As the Keeneland fall meet moves deep into its second half, the focus will be on the turf course for several races on Thursday – and, with opportunities to race on the turf in Kentucky in 2023 dwindling, those races are popular. The nominal feature on Thursday’s nine-race card is a $110,000 allowance going 1 1/16 miles on the turf, for 3-year-olds and up who have never won a race other-than, or who have never won two races. It has drawn an overflow 16 entries, with 12 horses permitted to start.

Ya Mar makes first start in 11 months

Michael Burns
Ya Mar returns off a lengthy layoff and last won in the 6 1/2-furlong South Ocean Stakes as a 2-year-old.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Stakes winner Ya Mar returns from an extended layoff as the probable favorite in Thursday’s opening race at Woodbine, a five-furlong, non-winners of three, inner-turf dash for Ontario-sired allowance types and $40,000 claimers.

A speedy 4-year-old trained by Mark Casse, Ya Mar notched her second start at 2 before ending up third in the Shady Well Stakes. She defeated Ontario-sired opposition with ease in her final juvenile appearance in the 6 1/2-furlong South Ocean Stakes.

Hard-hitting Nimitz Class leads Ballezzi Mile

Bill Denver
Nimitz Class is coming off an impressive victory over Gunite in the Parx Dirt Mile.

Nimitz Class is as tough and hearty as his namesake, a class of aircraft carriers used by the U.S. Navy.

The 4-year-old colt has won seven of his last 11 starts over the last 368 days and looks to add to that formidable record when he squares off against a good field of milers in Tuesday’s $75,000 M.P. Ballezzi Appreciation Mile at Parx Racing.

Straight Arrow looks tough on turf or dirt

Chelsea Durand
General Banker wins the $500,000 Great White Way division of the New York Stallion Stakes last December.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – With another soggy weekend forecast in the offing, the New York Racing Association postponed two turf stakes scheduled for Sunday, leaving a pair of New York-bred allowance races – oddly one scheduled for turf – as the co-features on a nine-race program.

The $125,000 Glen Cove and Grade 3, $150,000 Knickerbocker stakes scheduled for Sunday were not carded for that day and have been rescheduled for Thursday and Friday, respectively.

Kings River Knight back to turf in California Flag

Benoit Photo
Kings River Knight has a win and a second-placed finish in three tries over the Santa Anita turf course, where he'll return to turf in Sunday's California Flag.

The last time Kings River Knight was beaten in a turf sprint, he finished a nose behind The Chosen Vron in a thrilling running of the Sensational Star Stakes for California-breds on the hillside course at Santa Anita in March.

Kings River Knight had good company that day.

The Chosen Vron, winner of his last eight starts since September 2022, won the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at Del Mar in July and is rated as a leading contender for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint on Nov. 4 at Santa Anita.

Caravel had a five-race win streak end in the Troy Stakes, where she didn’t like the soft ground.

Race conditions and tough competition led to a seventh-place finish by Celestial Moon in his stakes debut in the Grade 1 Awesome Again Stakes at Santa Anita on Sept. 30.

The loss has not deterred trainer Mark Glatt from trying Celestial Moon on short rest in Sunday’s $75,000 Bull Dog Stakes at 1 1/8 miles at The Big Fresno Fair.

Trust Fund, Tall Paul clash again in New York Breeders' Futurity

Barbara D. Livingston
Trust Fund wins his debut Aug. 11 at Saratoga Racecourse.

Trust Fund and Tall Paul were second and third in a blanket finish in a stakes race last month at Finger Lakes. On Monday, they get a rematch in one of the Farmington, N.Y., track’s biggest races, the $161,547 New York Breeders’ Futurity for statebred 2-year-olds.

The nine-race Monday card, which begins at 1:15 p.m., was already one of the biggest at the season at the track, but gets another boost from the $50,000 Leon Reed Memorial. The race for New York-bred sprinters, originally scheduled for last week, was brought back in the condition book and now highlights the undercard.
