Breeders' Cup total handle down, Saturday betting up compared to 2024

Justin N. Lane
Handle for Saturday's Breeders' Cup card was $107.96 million, up 1.1 percent from last year.

Total commingled betting on the 14 Breeders’ Cup races held on Friday and Saturday at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Southern California declined 2.4 percent compared to total handle on the same races last year, according to charts of the races.

The slight decline was the second time in the past three years in which year-over-year handle declined on the 14 races that form the brunt of two consecutive cards. In 2023, handle on the 14 Breeders’ Cup races held at Sanita Anita declined 8.9 percent compared to record figures at the 2022 event, which was held at Keeneland.

Fall meet kicks off with Tempted, Chelsey Flower

Barbara D. Livingston
Spa Prospector ran third to Mythical in the Grade 3 Adirondack in August at Saratoga.

The Aqueduct fall meet opens Thursday with a focus on 2-year-old fillies, as the card features both the $150,000 Tempted and the $150,000 Chelsey Flower. There is also a maiden special weight for 2-year-old fillies bred in New York.

The Tempted was to have been run last Friday, but it was rescheduled when a forecast for high winds led to the cancellation of racing. The other stakes on the canceled card, the Pumpkin Pie, is rescheduled for Saturday.

Rhetorical targeting Maker's Mark Mile to start 2026

Barbara D. Livingston
Off a solid effort in the Breeders' Cup Mile, Rhetorical will start his 2026 season in the Maker's Mark Mile at Keeneland.

Rhetorical stamped himself as a world-class turf miler winning the Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland in October, and after validating that performance with a fine fourth-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Mile, he probably will launch his 2026 campaign right back at Keeneland.

Trainer Will Walden said Rhetorical had exited the Breeders’ Cup Mile in good condition but that the gelding, pending final discussions with his owners, will get a winter break and be aimed at the Grade 1 Maker’s Mark Mile in April.

Despite missing the Breeders' Cup Classic, Sovereignty could win Eclipse Awards for himself and trainer Bill Mott.

DEL MAR, Calif. – The results of the Breeders’ Cup may have done more to cloud than clear up the picture as far as Eclipse Awards for 2025 are concerned, and some of the stronger candidates in certain divisions may be those who didn’t participate in the two-day event.

Twisting Pistons should be able to control pace

Julie Wright
Jockey Ryan Munger is likely to have Twisting Pistons forwardly placed on Thursday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Jockey Ryan Munger is often effective on speed horses, and he looks to have the right stuff in Thursday’s sixth race at Woodbine with need-the-lead type Twisting Pistons.

A 4-year-old trained by Sid Attard for owner Lou Tucci, Twisting Pistons graduated for $25,000 in her second appearance of the year in June. She had to drop way down to $7,500 to clear the nonwinners-of-two condition three starts ago, doing so over a modest group in her second try under Munger.
