Hurricane Clair will show the way in La Prevoyante

Hurricane Clair trains at WO Sept 26 2024
Michael Burns
Hurricane Clair has made her last four starts in graded stakes. She takes a significant class drop in the La Prevoyante.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Hurricane Clair gets some big-time class relief in Saturday’s $100,000 La Prevoyante Stakes at Woodbine and should be favored. The question is, will she be able to control the pace in the 1 1/16-mile test for Ontario-sired females, as is her wont?

Barbara D. Livingston
Weigh the Risks has won four of her last five starts since moving to dirt.

The Go for Wand, a Grade 1 as recently 2009, will be run as a listed stakes for the first time, after losing its Grade 3 status this year. The one-mile race drew only a field of six.

Black-Eyed Susan a long-term goal for Jumping the Gun

Delaware Park
Jumping the Gun, runner-up in the Demoiselle, has the Black-Eyed Susan as a long-range goal.

Trainer Andy Simoff sent Jumping the Gun back home for a well-deserved winter layoff on Tuesday, a break that will likely last six to seven weeks. The Delaware Park-based juvenile filly capped her 2025 campaign with a runner-up finish in the Grade 2 Demoiselle on Saturday at Aqueduct.

Despite finishing 8 1/2 lengths behind the Todd Pletcher-trained filly Zany, Simoff said he was happy with Jumping the Gun’s effort in graded stakes company. In five career starts, including two stakes wins at Delaware, she has never finished worse than second.

Allard hoping Bender could be soft spot for Quint's Brew's return

Barbara D. Livingston
Quint's Brew, runner-up in the Carter and Westchester, could return in the Bender at Laurel.

Quint’s Brew, runner-up in the Grade 2 Carter and Grade 3 Westchester earlier this year, could make his long-awaited return later this month after a successful training stint at Delaware Park. Trainer Ned Allard remains cautious, but nominating him for the $100,000 Bender Memorial on Dec. 20 at Laurel Park could be a strong hint.

“There’s a couple spots, but I don’t even want to mention them,” Allard said. “I might take advantage of an allowance race just to get started back, but it’s going to be hard to resist the Maryland-bred race on the 20th.”

Winter's richest program opens with overflow stall demand

Coady Media
There have been 2,600 stall requests for Oaklawn’s 1,400-plus stalls during its winter meet.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Oaklawn Park might be more than 120 years old, but its team has managed to give each passing meet a fresh feel. That will again be the case Friday when the Arkansas track launches a 64-date season that continues through May 2.

The changes start with a new racing format. Oaklawn will put on a holiday meet through Jan. 4. Then, after a three-week break, the track will return with a classic meet from Jan. 30 to May 2.

Now stablemates, St. Brigid's Cross, Pinky Brier meet again

Adam Coglianese / NYRA
Pinky Brier meets her new Brad Cox-trained stablemate, St. Brigid's Cross, in Friday's feature at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – St. Brigid’s Cross and Pinky Brier have traded decisions the last two times they’ve met. The pair of New York-bred juvenile fillies, who now reside in the same barn, will be rivals once again in Friday’s first-level allowance for statebred 2-year-old fillies that serves as the feature on the eight-race card.

Trainer Brad Cox and owner Sandy Goldfarb claimed Pinky Brier for $50,000 on Oct. 17 and the 2-year-old filly, who won that day by 10 lengths, came back five weeks later to win a starter allowance/optional claimer by one length over St. Brigid’s Cross.
