A prominent Australian entrepreneur and Thoroughbred breeder has purchased one of Australia’s two major Thoroughbred auction houses, the Magic Millions company.
Ann and Jerry Moss, owners of 2010 Horse of the Year Zenyatta, announced Wednesday that their wildly popular 7-year-old mare will be bred to Bernardini for her first mating. Bernardini, 2006’s champion 3-year-old, is owned by Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum and stands at his Darley Stud at Jonabell Farm in Lexington.

Since 2009, he had been a pensioner at the Old Friends equine retirement facility in Georgetown, Ky.
Larry Ullman, who races and breeds as SLU Inc., is offering a reduction of his broodmare holdings at Monday’s Barretts January Mixed Sale in Pomona, Calif. One of the five broodmares he has in the sale is Bold Roberta, a 13-year-old Bold Badgett mare who earned $449,704. Bold Roberta sells in foal to Fusaichi Pegasus, and is expected to attract significant attention from breeders.

Miesque, the first two-time winner of a Breeders’ Cup race and a champion in both Europe and America, was euthanized Thursday due to the infirmities of old age at Lane’s End Farm in Kentucky, where she had been pensioned following a brilliant career as a broodmare. She was 27 years old. Imperious on the racecourse, the daughter of Nureyev and the Prove Out mare Pasadoble electrified Breeders’ Cup crowds at Hollywood Park in 1987 and at Churchill Downs a year later when storming to victory in the Mile.
The Ocala Breeders' Sales Company recorded signirficant overall gains at its two-day winter mixed sale, led by a 46-percent increase in gross revenue with 308 horses selling for a collective $2.37 million.
