Sunday’s nine-race card at Santa Anita will be contested only on the main track since El Nino has brought some much-needed rain to Southern California this week. This makes things difficult for horseplayers, as many of the horses trying dirt Sunday are primarily turf runners. That said, there are a couple of intriguing runners Sunday who could be playable.

With a new year comes a clean slate for most players. It’s a time to start over and set solid objectives for the coming year. Before I move forward, I need to examine where I am today.

Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita have the best winter racing in the country this Saturday, though the circumstances are even more pronounced than usual. The two tracks are the only ones with any graded stakes as Gulfstream is running three such races, and Santa Anita has two.

There isn't much speed at all in Saturday's Sham Stakes at Santa Anita. That's why I'm going with Laoban, even if he is the only maiden in this field.

The trainer comments and the workout pattern, especially the six-furlong work in 1:10, hint that California Chrome could deliver a huge performance right off the bench in the San Pasqual.
