Paz the Bourbon (#3) is the deserving favorite in this spot. She’s run well in all of her turf starts, and made a successful return to the races in her seasonal debut last time out. While that race came against allowance company, she actually is not facing a tougher field in this spot. I have no major knocks against the favorite, but I’m far more interested in another runner.

The established options in this race are not very appealing. Hansen’s Help (#7) faced better runners as a two-year-old, but she’s a question mark coming back off a lengthy layoff. Giant Ending (#5) and Desert Affair (#6) have run competitive speed figures on occasion, but both of them have had their fair share of chances. Diamonds N Stones (#8) was installed as the morning-line favorite off a third-place finish at this level last time. However, she didn't actually run any better than the runner that finished directly behind her that day, Anna Liffey – and she is the one I want in this race.
Saturday’s card at Santa Anita features two Grade 3 stakes races on the main track: the Affirmed for 3-year-olds and the Precisionist for 3-year-olds and up. A midcard pick-three sequence begins with the Affirmed and concludes with the Precisionist; I’ll focus on that three-race stretch.
