Casanova Jack ($8), one of only two horses in the field with a previous win on turf, drew clear in the stretch to post a 1 3/4-length victory in the $45,000 Oliver's Twist Stakes for 2-year-old Maryland-breds at Laurel Park.

Sent off as the second choice in a field of six, Casanova Jack, ridden by Horacio Karamanos for trainer Carlos Garcia, covered the six furlongs on firm turf in 1:08.76.

B's Wild Rush romps in Funkhouser

B's Wild Rush ($7.40), a beaten favorite at 1-5 and even money in her first two starts locally, made amends by cruising to a 6 1/2-length victory Friday night in the $51,200 Ruth Funkhouser Stakes at Charles Town.

The seven-furlong Funkhouser was the local prep for West Virginia-accredited 3-year-old fillies pointing to the $100,000 West Virginia Division of Tourism on the Oct. 20 West Virginia Breeders Classics program.

Ridden by Travis Dunkelberger for trainer Scott Lake, B's Wild Rush covered the distance in 1:26.98.

Humoristic snaps losing streak in Violet

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Trainer Hamilton Smith had plenty to celebrate Friday night at the Meadowlands as Humoristic ended a 13-race losing streak with a one-length upset in the Grade 3, $150,000 Violet Stakes for fillies and mares on the turf.

It was the first win for the 6-year-old Humoristic since the 2005 Violet, and came as the mare winds down her career.

"She always ran good up there at night," Smith said. "We're looking at maybe one more start. Or maybe not, and that's it. We'll make a decision in the next week or so, but she came out of the race good."

Owners' Handicap has prestige far beyond its purse

AUBURN, Wash. - The $22,300 Owners' Handicap, which will be renewed on Sunday for the 34th time in 41 years, has at least two distinctions.

Run at five furlongs, it is the only race in the Northwest, and perhaps anywhere, that is run under riders' weights. The owners, or more often their trainers, determine the weights their horses will carry when they name a rider.

The rules change was approved by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board at its most recent meeting.

"The 10-cent superfecta is the wagering innovation our fans have been asking for," said NYRA's president and CEO, Charles Hayward. "We thank the New York State Racing and Wagering Board for giving us the opportunity to provide this wagering option."

Copper State gets sprint prep for stakes

STICKNEY, Ill. - Hawthorne hosts a multi-race Illinois-bred stakes day on Nov. 3, and it's a good bet that trainer Richard Hazelton has circled the Illini Princess Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on dirt as a likely spot for Copper State. Copper State's one big race came under just such conditions, producing a win here last winter in the $117,000 Debutante Stakes.

Jerkens eyes a 4th Gold Cup upset

ELMONT, N.Y. - Allen Jerkens goes for his fourth victory in the Jockey Club Gold Cup on Sunday and, as usual, he won't be favored to get it.

But the Hall of Fame trainer earned the nickname the "Giant Killer" in part for his work in this race. In 1973, Jerkens sent out Prove Out against 1-5 Riva Ridge and won the race by nearly five lengths. In 1975, Jerkens's Group Plan beat 1-5 Wajima by a neck.

Then came 1998 when Jerkens's 34-1 shot Wagon Limit upset both Skip Away, the 1-5 favorite, and Gentlemen, the 2-1 second choice.
