ELMONT, N.Y. - Allen Jerkens goes for his fourth victory in the Jockey Club Gold Cup on Sunday and, as usual, he won't be favored to get it.

But the Hall of Fame trainer earned the nickname the "Giant Killer" in part for his work in this race. In 1973, Jerkens sent out Prove Out against 1-5 Riva Ridge and won the race by nearly five lengths. In 1975, Jerkens's Group Plan beat 1-5 Wajima by a neck.

Then came 1998 when Jerkens's 34-1 shot Wagon Limit upset both Skip Away, the 1-5 favorite, and Gentlemen, the 2-1 second choice.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The purses of two stakes run at Del Mar earlier this year, the Grade 3 La Jolla Handicap and the Oceanside Stakes, could be subject to redistribution after Medici Code tested positive for an excessive amount of clenbuterol after both, the California Horse Racing Board announced on Friday. Medici Code won the La Jolla and finished second in a division of the Oceanside Stakes.

Darrell Vienna, who trains Medici Code, said Friday that he had been served with complaints by the racing board. No hearing has been set for the case, which Vienna said he would fight.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - It's too early to say for sure, but there's a good chance there will be a short field for the Grade 3 Ballerina Breeders' Cup on Oct. 13 at Hastings.

Monashee will be a heavy favorite in the Ballerina and logic dictates she will be tough to beat. After all, Monashee packed 130 pounds in her easy win over Lady Raj in the $50,000 Delta Colleen Handicap last Saturday - her 10th straight stakes win - and she will only have to carry scale weight of 123 pounds in the Ballerina. Three-year-old fillies will carry 120 pounds.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sahara Heat, who shipped up from Keeneland to take the Grade 3 Marine Stakes this spring, will be back at Woodbine for Sunday's Ontario Derby.

The $150,000 Ontario Derby, an open 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds, will have Sovereign Award implications for leading contenders Alezzandro and Mike Fox. Sahara Heat, owned by Darley Stable and based at Saratoga with trainer Eoin Harty, will be looking to play the spoiler.

"He's training well, and this looks like a good spot to run back in," said Harty. "He ran well up there."

MIAMI - Kerwin John became the newest member of the local jockey colony, moving his tack to south Florida following the recent conclusion of the Arlington Park meet.

John, 32, a native of the Virgin Islands, had been a staple on the Southern California circuit for the past several years. But after health issues with his daughters Kwanisha, 7, and Keyshawna, 2, interrupted his career on a couple of occasions last fall and again this spring, John began looking for a change.

FORT ERIE, Ontario - A town hall meeting earlier this month to discuss the future of the Fort Erie racetrack has been followed up with discussions involving all concerned parties.

A recent meeting was attended by Ontario Lottery Commission representative Michelle DiEmanuele, track owner Nordic Gaming, and city officials, including Fort Erie Mayor Doug Martin. All of the participants indicated that the meeting went well, but there is still no commitment to grant the track an increase in slot revenue.

ARCADIA, Calif. - With widely varying levels of expectations, Salute the Sarge, P.S.U. Grad, and Trickster Nickster have been entered in Sunday's $250,000 Norfolk Stakes at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting, attempting to take advantage of a race that has lost three leading contenders in recent weeks.

Sealy Hill, disqualified from her first-place finish in the July 1 Bison City Stakes at Woodbine, has been reinstated as the winner following a day-long Ontario Racing Commission appeal hearing on Wednesday.

The decision makes Sealy Hill the first winner of the triple tiara for Canadian-bred 3-year-old fillies, which was inaugurated in 1999.

Sealy Hill, owned by Melnyk Racing Stable, had been demoted to third place in the $250,000 Bison City after the stewards ruled she had lugged in under jockey Patrick Husbands and caused Quiet Jungle to steady at the eighth pole.

The handle at Assiniboia Downs made across-the-board gains at the 2007 meeting, which ended last Sunday.

Total handle for the 69-day season was $7,824,090, up 8 percent from $7,244,813 in 2006, with the average daily handle up to $113,393 from $104,578.

Ontrack wagering for the season increased 2 percent to $5,586,141 from $5,473,085, while offtrack wagering went up 26 percent, to $2,237,949 from $1,771,728.

Hollywood Park will offer a shorter fall meeting this year compared to 2006, but a more lucrative stakes schedule that has been increased by one event, to 23 races.

The richest race at the Inglewood, Calif., track will be the $750,000-guaranteed CashCall Futurity, formerly known as the Hollywood Futurity. One of six Grade 1 stakes at the meeting, the CashCall Futurity is being sponsored by the CashCall lending company for the first time. Last year, the Hollywood Futurity had a purse of $250,000-added and was worth $441,500.
