Cat Charmer responds three times when Coa asks

Eibar Coa asked Cat Charmer for three different moves in the $111,000 Pebbles Stakes at Belmont Park, and the 3-year-old filly made each one adeptly en route to a half-length score over Queen Joanne.

Breaking from the outside post in the seven-horse field, Cat Charmer was five wide straightening away down the backside in the one-mile race. Coa dragged Cat Charmer back to last and then guided her to the rail before asking her to advance into contention along the inside.

"I didn't want to be too far back and wide,'' Coa said.

Big year leads Miss Macy Sue to BC

STICKNEY, Ill. - Hawthorne Race Course, suffice it to say, is not a hotbed of hopefuls for the Breeders' Cup races three weekends hence, but there is at least one horse stabled at Hawthorne heading to Monmouth Park, and Miss Macy Sue is going with more than an outsider's chance.

Lava Man to skip Breeders' Cup

ARCADIA, Calif. - Lava Man, who finished last in the Grade 2 Oak Tree Mile on Sunday, will not start in any Breeders' Cup races and will be pointed to the $250,000 California Cup Classic for statebreds at Santa Anita on Nov. 4, according to trainer Doug O'Neill and co-owner Steve Kenly.

The California Cup Classic will give Lava Man a chance to salvage the second half of the season, which has seen the 6-year-old gelding's form tail off remarkably after two seasons as the leader of the California handicap division.

Ideal trip sets up Idiot Proof for win

ARCADIA, Calif. - Idiot Proof was the beneficiary of an ideal trip under jockey David Flores in Sunday's $300,000 Ancient Title Stakes at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting. The same could not be said for the journey of Greg's Gold, the 7-10 favorite.

Idiot Proof won the Grade 1 race over six furlongs by three-quarters of a length over Greg's Gold, who was stuck behind horses for most of the final quarter-mile. The victory gave Idiot Proof an automatic berth to the $2 million Breeders' Cup Sprint at Monmouth Park on Oct. 27.
