Delaforce picks up pieces in Kingarvie

Delaforce ($10.10) held off favored Lady's First Cat on Saturday to capture Woodbine's $125,000 Kingarvie Stakes, an Ontario-sired event for 2-year-olds that was ruined by the prerace antics of Grazettes Landing.

Grazettes Landing reared up in the gate, and his legs came over the side of the stall and onto the prerace favorite, Stuck in Traffic. Grazettes Landing and Stuck in Traffic were both scratched, along with Dancingall Theway, reducing the field to five.

Fast Deal hangs on by a nose

Fast Deal, ridden by Terry Thompson, dueled favored Mary Delaney into defeat, then barely outlasted a desperate late rush by Lady Belsara to post a nose victory in the $47,500 Holiday Inaugural on Saturday at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.

Trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Fast Deal notched her first stakes victory from 31 overall starts when finishing six furlongs in 1:09.77 over Polytrack. She returned $17.60 as the third choice in a field of 10 fillies and mares. A 4-year-old Grand Slam filly, Fast Deal is owned by her breeder, Overbrook Farm.

Somethinaboutlaura hits million mark

Odds-on Somethinaboutlaura ($3) attained millionaire status with a half-length victory in Saturday's $75,000 Pacific Heights Stakes at Golden Gate Fields.

The 5-year-old mare earned $45,000 for her victory, lifting her career earnings to $1,008,865.

"Our strategy was to go to the front and lead all the way, but Special Heather was going a little faster than I wanted so I sat off her," winning jockey Russell Baze said.

Change pays off for Control System

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Plan B worked out just fine for the connections of Control System.

When an allowance race at Philadelphia Park failed to fill, trainer Michael Trombetta shipped Control System to Aqueduct for Saturday's $81,700 Garland of Roses Handicap and she responded with a 2 3/4-length victory over More Angels. It was 1 1/2 lengths back to 4-5 favorite Oprah Winney, who was bottled up for most of the trip.

Ballast repeats in Tropical Turf

MIAMI - Ballast, winless since capturing the 2006 Tropical Park Turf Handicap, successfully defended that title Saturday by outfinishing National Captain to post a hard fought neck verdict in the Grade 3 event.

The Tropical Park Turf was the best of four $100,000 stakes that made up Saturday's Grand Slam I program at Calder.

Steve's Double caps big day for Werner

With the kind of day the trainer Ronny Werner was having on Saturday at Fair Grounds, you kind of figured things were going to work out for Steve's Double in the $60,000 Tenacious Handicap. Werner swept Saturday's early daily double, won a third race later on the card, and made it an even four when Steve's Double turned back Crossword to win the Tenacious by one length.

Three riders down at Hawthorne

Jockeys Lyndie Wade and Randy Meier both were injured in a nasty spill in Friday's third race. Wade, a 16-year-old apprentice, was knocked out, and as of about 4 p.m Central had not yet regained consciousness, according to his agent, Jay Fedor. Meier, a veteran with a long history of injuries, broke his left shoulder, according to his agent, Penny Ffitch-Heyes. Both riders were taken to Loyola Hospital in nearby Maywood.

Good news for Benson: Arravale to return in '08

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Not too many things went right this year for veteran trainer Mac Benson and he acknowledges that fact.

"It's been a disappointing year," said Benson.

Benson entered 2007 with high hopes centered on Arravale, a Kentucky-bred 4-year-old filly he trains for Bob Costigan. But at least Benson can forward to next year with Arravale, who will be staying in training.
