Intriguing matchup in Os West Futurity

PORTLAND, Ore. - A marquee matchup in the $40,000-added Os West Oregon Futurity, featuring the exceptional juvenile fillies Jimbos Fire Ant and Lady's Purse, will highlight Sunday's Oregon Championship card. Jimbos Fire Ant, a daughter of Baquero from the barn of trainer Cookie Root, defeated Lady's Purse by 2 1/2 lengths in the six-furlong Janet Wineberg here on Nov. 4. Track trying to be more fan friendly

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Remember the good old days at Gulfstream Park, when a fan could spend an entire afternoon at the races soaking up the sun, lounging in his beach chair while never having to set foot in the grandstand? Track officials say they are working to bring some of that charm back for the 2008 meet that opens on Jan. 3.

Ever since the old grandstand was torn down following the conclusion of the 2004 season, there have been complaints that the construction of a new casino came at the expense of outdoor seating areas for racegoers.

Prince of Wales triumph tops Attard's year

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Kevin Attard had a successful season last year in his new role as private trainer for the Knob Hill Stable and the estate of Steve Stavro. He sent out 10 winners, including three-time stakes winner and champion 2-year-old male Leonnatus Anteas, and earned $780,000 in purses.

And while that may seem to be a tough act to follow, Attard built on that success this year as stakes winners Alezzandro, Leonnatus Anteas, and Siwa spearheaded a year in which horses he trains won 14 races and almost $1.3 million heading into Thursday's program.

Sam Houston: Smooth Bid stretching out

Smooth Bid will get back to the distance of perhaps his best race this year when he moves to 1 1/16 miles for the $25,000 Buffalo Bayou at Sam Houston Race Park in Houston. The overnight turf stakes for 3-year-olds and up drew a field of seven, including multiple stakes winner Silver Haze.

Smooth Bid last raced at 7 1/2 furlongs, and after breaking from post 9 in the $45,000 No Le Hace at Retama Park, he missed by a nose. Before that he was third by a half-length to Grade 3 winner Ascertain in the $100,000 Remington Park Green at 1 1/16 miles on turf Oct. 21.
