Vacare will ship west for Matriarch

ELMONT, N.Y. - Vacare, who earned an automatic berth into the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf with her half-length victory in last weekend's First Lady Stakes at Keeneland, will not run in that race and instead will be pointed to the Grade 1 Matriarch at Hollywood Park in late November.

Trainer Christophe Clement said several factors went into the decision to skip the Breeders' Cup, including the distance of the race, the venue, and the fact Vacare will likely remain in training next year.

Weight only concern for True Metropolitan

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - True Metropolitan, who will be a strong favorite in the 1 3/8-mile Premiers at Hastings on Sunday, has proven he can handle distance. After all, he is undefeated going 11 furlongs. He won the Premiers last year and has won the 1 3/8-mile Speed to Spare two years in a row.

But his trainer, Terry Jordan, is concerned that the 129 pounds True Metropolitan will carry Sunday could prove to be too much for the classy 5-year-old gelding, who has earned $740,708 from his 15 career wins.

Tote snafu costs bettors big bucks

FORT ERIE, Ontario - A number of horseplayers had a frustrating day at Fort Erie on Monday when a tote problem turned potential winners into losers.

At Fort Erie, there is a strong tendency to bet on both the local runners and the races from Woodbine. Other simulcasts are part of the overall play, but the Ontario tracks are often preferred.

Following Monday's third race at Woodbine, some whoops and hollers could be heard when longshot Bag of Hammers placed. The triactor paid $1,073.80 and the exactor $112.20.

Great Lakes rider injured

Jockey Jorge Collazo Jr. suffered a bruised lung in a spill Wednesday night at Great Lakes Downs, according to his agent, Ronny Salmen. The final race of the Wednesday card was canceled after a delay of approximately a half-hour spent stabilizing Collazo before transporting him to the hospital.

Salmen said that Collazo was put on a ventilator to assist his breathing at the hospital. The ventilator was removed Thursday morning.

Russell playing it safe with House Mouse

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Monica Russell, who checked in last week from Alberta, isn't wasting any time testing the waters here at Woodbine.

House Mouse, a winner of 2 of 3 starts at Northlands Park this summer, has been entered in Saturday's $125,000 Bull Page, a six-furlong race for Ontario-sired 2-year-old colts and geldings.

Russell also had considered entering House Mouse in Sunday's $250,000 Cup and Saucer, a 1 1/16-mile turf race for Canadian-bred 2-year-olds, but opted to stick with the more modest goal.

Sharp on dirt, but how about Polytrack?

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Les Grands Trois returned from a layoff with his best race yet, so it's understandable that trainer Bobby Frankel is eager to see if the lightly raced colt can continue to rise in the 3-year-old ranks. Seven rivals await Les Grands Trois in the $200,000 Perryville Stakes, the secondary feature on a 10-race Saturday card at Keeneland.

"If he can handle the Polytrack, it looks like this race might set up pretty nice for him," said Frankel. "Obviously that's a question with a lot of these horses, but I'm thinking he can."

Daaher to skip BC and target Cigar Mile

ELMONT, N.Y. - Daaher, the impressive winner of last Sunday's Grade 2 Jerome Handicap, will skip the $1 million Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and instead be pointed to the Grade 1 Cigar Mile at Aqueduct on Nov. 24, trainer Kiaran McLaughlin said Thursday.

McLaughlin felt the 19 days between the Jerome and the BC Dirt Mile was not long enough to allow Daaher to be ready to give another strong effort.

War Chant distance suits Stormin Away

ARCADIA, Calif. - Distances have never been a problem for Stormin Away. He won his maiden back in 2004 going a mile, and earlier this year won the Round Table Handicap at 1 3/4 miles on turf at Hollywood Park.

"I think he'll run any distance," trainer Jeff Mullins said. "He'll run down a brick road if you want him to."

For Stormin Away's next start, Mullins has chosen the shorter distance of a mile on turf, in Saturday's $60,000 restricted War Chant Stakes at the Oak Tree at Santa Anita meeting.

Molina looks long gone

Tommy Molina, riding his first full season at Great Lakes Downs, appears to have the jockey title in the bag. With only 15 of 100 racing days left in the meet, he has 126 wins, 21 more than Freddie Mata, a two-time riding riding champion here. Mike Allen is third with 81 wins through Tuesday's racing.

Jockey gets first win

When Little Darby crossed the finish line in the fifth race on Tuesday, it was the first win for both horse and jockey.

A first-time starter for trainer Tim Hamm, Little Darby led every step of the six-furlong maiden special weight event and drew off to win by 1 3/4 lengths. Little Darby returned $13.80, a good price for a Hamm first-time starter.

It was the first win for jockey Marcelo Cardozo Martinez. Martinez, 25, a native of Mexico City, has been an exercise rider for Hamm for eight years after starting out as a groom.
