Well Armed could be Harty's big gun

ARCADIA, Calif. - It may only be the first of January, but trainer Eoin Harty has big expectations for Well Armed in 2008. He fully expects the 5-year-old Well Armed to be part of the major races of the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting, notably the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap on March 1.

To get there, Well Armed must run well in Saturday's $150,000 San Pasqual Handicap at 1 1/16 miles, his American stakes debut. Well Armed is one of seven older horses that have been entered in the Grade 2 San Pasqual, the first major race of the meeting for older males on the main track.

Trujillo aims to build on breakout year

What do jockeys like Jerry Bailey, Jose Santos, Alex Solis and, more recently, Eibar Coa and Javier Castellano have in common? They all won riding titles at Calder Race Course before going on to bigger and better things on the national stage.

The next jockey whose name might appear on that list is Elvis Trujillo, who comes off the biggest year of his career in 2007 and enters the 2008 Gulfstream meeting as a rising star in an already star-studded riding colony.

Keep an eye on these youngsters

OLDSMAR, Fla. - Tampa Bay Downs featured the potential stars of the future last Saturday by running all 11 races for 2-year-olds. The card was highlighted by the Sandpiper and Inaugural stakes, which were punctuated by blanket finishes, game winners, and some noteworthy efforts in defeat.

The six-furlong Sandpiper for fillies turned out to be a case of some good placement and luck on the part of jockey Carlos Montalvo and Unfolding Wish, while some others in the field weren't so fortunate.

Fertile ground for Derby prospects

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - The eventual winner of the Kentucky Derby has wintered in south Florida the last two years, and three of the last five. So it comes as little surprise that the Florida search for Derby contenders already is in high gear for 2008, especially with the Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner and likely divisional champion War Pass having taken up residence at the Palm Meadows training center just north of Gulfstream Park.

Trainer tries to end dry spell

ALBANY, Calif. - Trainer Frances Henderson entered New Year's Day on an 0-for-157 losing streak that has lasted more than two years. If the 43-race maiden From Above didn't win Tuesday, she has a good chance to end the winless streak Thursday with Two Thirds Victory, who has five rivals in a maiden race for 3-year-old fillies at one mile on the Tapeta main track. Although she is 0 for 9, Two Thirds Victory has run second the last two times she faced maidens, at 7 1/2 furlongs and one mile on the turf.

Contessa breaks New York win mark

Trainer Gary Contessa set a record for wins in one year on the New York Racing Association circuit Saturday when Silver Prospector won the first race at Aqueduct. The win was the 157th of 2007 at a NYRA track for Contessa, breaking the mark of 156 set by Frank Martin in 1974.

Contessa, who won his 158th race when Whistlin won the seventh, worked for Martin for five years before venturing out on his own in 1985.

Santa Anita carryover hits $587,000

ARCADIA, Calif. -- Many racing fans won't be able to party quite as late as they might desire on Monday night because a huge pick six carryover of $587,644.60 will be awaiting them on Tuesday's New Year's Day card at Santa Anita.

The carryover was the result of a longshot-filled New Year's Eve program, which included Latin Lobo at $73.40 in the fifth race and Ever a Friend ($17.20) in the featured Impressive Luck Handicap. There were no tickets alive in the pick six after the fifth leg.

No one hit the pick six on Sunday, either, so this is a two-day carryover.

Costa Rising has ankle surgery

Costa Rising will be sidelined for the next five months after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on Friday in Lafayette, La., to remove a small bone chip from his left hind ankle, according to his trainer, Glenn Delahoussaye.

"I'd call it a flake," the trainer said. "It was a small piece of bone that flaked off his ankle."

Delahoussaye said that Costa Rising was scheduled to return to his Evangeline Downs Training Center base on Monday. Delahoussaye looks for him to resume racing around May.
