Barrier Reef gaining focus

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - As a trainer for Sheikh Mohammed al Maktoum's Darley Stable, trainer Tom Albertrani understands that it is his job to develop horses that might eventually be transferred to Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin operation and another trainer.

In late 2007, Albertrani won maiden races with the colt Numaany and the filly Musical Note, both of whom were quickly transferred to Godolphin and either have gone or will soon be headed to Dubai.

Baker pins hopes on Notgivinmyloveaway

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - With the possible exceptions of being Canadian and a showman of chickens and ducks, Reade Baker is not unlike any of the other trainers who will saddle a Kentucky Derby hopeful Saturday in the Hutcheson Stakes at Gulfstream Park.

Baker is hoping that Notgivinmyloveaway, one of 10 entered in the seven-furlong Hutcheson, will pass what shapes up as a rugged test in Gulfstream's first milestone in the annual Florida Derby series for 3-year-olds.

Control System rolls in Interborough

Control System ($4.50) continued her mastery of Aqueduct's inner track as well as her older rival Oprah Winney by rolling to a 3 1/2-length victory in the $79,325 Interborough Handicap at Aqueduct. Karakorum Starlet got up for second by six lengths over Oprah Winney.

Cowboy Cal gets best of stablemate

Following in the same path as another promising young 3-year-old named Barbaro two winters earlier, Cowboy Cal rallied to a decisive two-length victory over stablemate Why Tonto in the $100,000 Tropical Park Derby at Calder.

Cowboy Cal came into the Grade 3 Tropical Park Derby off a similarly easy victory in the Laurel Futurity. Barbaro also closed out his 2-year-old campaign winning the Laurel Futurity and began his 3-year-old season with an easy win in the 2006 Tropical Park Derby.

In Summation lowers track record

In Summation reverted to his form of last summer in Tuesday's $108,900 El Conejo Handicap at Santa Anita, winning his fourth stakes in the last 12 months and easily beating the heavily favored Idiot Proof.

Idiot Proof, the runner-up in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Monmouth Park in October, led briefly in the stretch but faded to finish third, 3 1/4 lengths behind In Summation as the 3-5 favorite in the field of five.

New faces at Gulf as changes roll on

Equiphotos

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - From a quality standpoint, Gulfstream Park is coming off one of the best seasons in track history. Five reigning Breeders' Cup winners, including 2006 Horse of the Year Invasor, raced at Gulfstream in 2007, as did Curlin, the likely successor to that title.

Big Truck leads off Tagg's winter lineup

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Aside from Street Sense, no 3-year-old commanded more attention coming into 2007 than Nobiz Like Shobiz. That placed trainer Barclay Tagg squarely, albeit somewhat uncomfortably, in the spotlight as he guided Nobiz Like Shobiz along the Kentucky Derby trail from his winter base at Gulfstream Park.
