Garcia, Lake, Cole best in Maryland

Jockey Luis Garcia, trainer Scott Lake, and owner Robert Cole finished 2007 as the leaders at Maryland's major tracks.

Lake and Cole also finished at the top of the standings for Laurel Park's 17-week fall meeting, which ended last Saturday. Garcia, who missed nearly six weeks with a broken wrist, was second in the fall meet's rider standings.

Garcia, 23, had 140 victories at Laurel and Pimlico in 2007. He captured the Pimlico spring and Laurel summer meet riding titles, and earned a career-best $4.3 million.

New season at the starting gate

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Gulfstream Park opens Thursday for its long winter meet with a slightly revised stakes schedule and the familiar expectations of producing major contenders in the 3-year-old and handicap divisions.

All the major Gulfstream races retain their usual spots on the calendar, with the Sunshine Millions set for Jan. 26, the Donn Handicap on Feb. 2, the Fountain of Youth on Feb.o24, and the Florida Derby on March 29. Many of the stakes that in past years supported these major events have been moved to help fill out other weekends throughout the meet.

Turf dash draws strong field

MIAMI - The long Calder racing season, which began April 25, ends Wednesday with a 12-race program highlighted by a $35,000 allowance race on the grass that brings together a stakes-quality field.

Lord Robyn, Not Acclaim, and Hollywood Left, three of the leaders of the local division, will attempt to defend their home turf against Midwest invader Chihulykee and former Grade 3 grass winner Around the Cape in the five-furlong dash, which drew a field of nine including Blue Pepsi Lodge, who is entered for the main track only.

Our Choice rallies from far back

Our Choice closed from more than 10 lengths off the pace to win the $125,000 Red Hedeman by 1 1/4 lengths at Sunland Park on Saturday. Etoile de Dome, a filly who was prominent throughout, finished second in the one-mile race for 2-year-olds bred in New Mexico.

Our Choice ($9.40) covered the distance in 1:37.92. Alfredo Juarez Jr. was aboard the colt for Triple AAA Ranch and trainer Dwain Grissom.

El Mirage makes amends for flop in the slop

El Mirage, who was a non-threatening third as the 1-5 favorite in a stakes run in the slop locally on Dec. 1, bounced back to form by capturing the $50,000 Lost in the Fog Juvenile at Turf Paradise on Saturday.

New Year's Eve carryover at Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. - The New Year’s Eve program at Santa Anita begins with a pick six carryover of $153,466.

It is the first pick six carryover of the 2007-08 meeting, which began last Wednesday.

Monday’s pick six covers the third through eighth races on a program that begins at 1 p.m.

Five of the six races are on the main synthetic track. The lone turf race is the seventh race, the $75,000 Impressive Luck Handicap over about 6 1/2 furlongs.

Dearest Trickski wires La Brea

ARCADIA, Calif. - Dearest Trickski, who was running in $10,000 claiming races in Texas as recently as April, won her stakes debut in Saturday's $250,000 La Brea Stakes at Santa Anita.

Despite her modest history, Dearest Trickski's victory in the Grade 1 La Brea was not necessarily an upset. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Dearest Trickski since she was claimed by owner Tom Mankiewicz and trainer John Sadler for $32,000 from trainer Cody Autrey's stable at Del Mar in August.

Two straight stakes for Junior College

Junior College, coming off a five-length score in the Bet on Sunshine Stakes over Churchill Downs's dirt course, proved similarly adept over the synthetic Polytrack surface Saturday, winning the $50,000 Holiday Cheer Stakes at Turfway Park by 3 1/2 lengths.

Showing his customary early speed, Junior College pressed Reigning Court early in the six-furlong race through an opening quarter-mile in 22.05 seconds. As the field raced through the turn, he took command, carving out a half-mile in 45.06.

Rutherienne captures a close one

MIAMI - Rutherienne capped off a successful but somewhat nerve-wracking afternoon for trainer Christophe Clement with a game neck victory in Saturday's $100,000 Frances Genter Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Calder. Clement came out on top in a similarly tight finish 30 minutes earlier when Bayou's Lassie outlasted Amazing Speed by the same margin in the $100,000 Stage Door Betty Handicap.

Both races were part of Calder's four-stakes Saturday card, dubbed Grand Slam III.

Cozy Time beats favorite

Cozy Time ($40.60) came back for a head win over 2-5 favorite Thunder Mission in the $54,500 Lookout Stakes at Delta Downs on Friday night. The one-mile race was one of two stakes on the card, and both were restricted to horses who had never won a stakes.

Cozy Time set fractions of 23.21 seconds for the opening quarter, 48.21 for the half-mile mark, and 1:13.71 for six furlongs. He lost the advantage to Thunder Mission after that, but came back for the win, covering the distance in 1:40.62.
